As the other said every game has a different story and characters apart from X and X-2. I'd recommend you to buy X First. It's the best and i'ts simplier to get into the cambat system.
You don't go to nalbina in the ferry. I also thought I had to but not. If you explore all the Estersand you'll find a way to Nalbina (I think it's in that zone that looks a bit like a labirynth, I'm not really sure).
