DOOM II: Hell on Earth and GC's Metroid Prime both got perfect scores from me, deservedly so.

... and at the time these were the pinnacles of gaming. As was Castlevania: SOTN. Man I played the **** out of that game.

Basically, this came about from looking at user's reviews and seeing masses of 10/10s. Upon reading the reviews, I see the reviewers in question talking about problems with the game. Now in my mind, 10/10 means "100%". Now I see your point about 10/10 not necessarily meaning "perfect". Okay, I'll go along with that idea.

Treflis: Rating systems do have meaning... that's why they exist. Yes, personal taste has a lot to do with it, but it's really more of a matter is "how good is this product"? For example: I don't like Guitar Hero. Never have. However, it is a quality product, and I'd give it 8/10. I don't like playing it at all, but I can see it has value and is well produced.

DraugenCP: Yeah, it was a bit on the sour side. I was drinking and was annoyed at Gamespot's lackluster user reviews. If you're going to sit down and write 10 paragraphs on a game, why be lazy about the score? Also: it was short and sweet. Only four paragraphs... then again... I've done a lot of writing in my time. =)

Alliecrombie: I think it deserves a 9/10, but you gets lovin's for the rating. ^_^

I'm going to make this short and sweet.

I'm sick of seeing so many people reviewing games and giving them 10/10. I don't think you understand... 10/10 means the game isperfect. Flawless. Utterly sublime experience. You cannot think of a single flaw in the game. Playing the game made your life better, made your free time playing games better.

Look though the player reviews. Look at how many reviews say things like "A lot of bugs, but once you get around them it's a great game... 10/10". "There are some problems with the balancing, and the graphics aren't that great, but it's a lot of fun... 10/10".

If there's an issue with the game, don't give it 10/10.An issue is an imperfection. 10/10 is perfect.

You do the gaming community a disservice by rating an imperfect game as perfection. It artificially jacks up the game's score. Sit back, think about your experience. How great was it, really? A 7/10 score means a game is good. An 8/10 game is great. A 9/10 is fantastic...

Was it really...perfect?

Hahah! I just figured out how to open it!

I have to open it, and then hit "cancel" before it comes up! When I do that, it'll open and run fine!

Do the usual driver updates for your video card, etc?

That other message is your firewall. It doesn't know what Steam is, and is asking if it should block it.

I can't open Half Life at all. I bought the Orange Box today, and I knew I'd regret it. I've *never* been able to use Steam. Last time I tried I bought a copy of Half Life, tried to register it, and it told me my CD key was already in use. I complained, having just bought the game in a store (in plastic, reputable place!) and their response was simple: "Oh, it's okay. You can just buy another copy. Since you're in Australia, though, it'll be extra for shipping"

GEE! THANKS! I CAN JUST BUY ANOTHER WHOLE COPY AND WAIT FOR IT TO COME FROM AMERICA! Thanks! That's veeeeerrrry kind of you.
