Yup. it's called accepting the facts. Putting together logic, reasoning and coming to a conclusion based on facts. You chose to look for reasons elsewhere when they were right staring you right in the face. Like I said it was hilarious watching you grasping at straws instead of simply admitting to yourself that maybe Sony did something right. This is important because you've spent the past 9 months claiming that Sony's success is due to them not fucking up as much as Microsoft.

And no, the people who buy consoles on Day 1 do not necessarily buy it for the launch lineup. Everyone knows this but you. But then again, your knowledge about console gaming is limited. IIRC, you thought Crysis could not be done on consoles.

Well, considering that Shame-us and dvader (both of whom bought the PS4 at launch) agreed with some of what I said, your weak attempts trying to discredit me ring hollow as usual.

There's really no need to get bent out of shape over anything I said, they're just some observations and nothing more. I have no idea what it was that offended you so much.

If you think a console's sales depends on the exclusives at launch then I dont know what to tell you. It doesn't have much to do with the third party games either since all of them have been available for a month on last gen consoles and PC. What did the PS2 launch with? A bunch of Dreamcast ports and Tekken Tag Tournament. At least in NA. A console is a 6 year investment. No one buys console based on what they are getting today. It's the promise of an amazing array of first party games and other exclusives that Sony has been producing for the past six years year after year.

It's hilarious to read your post and see you do your mighty best to look for reasons to not give Sony credit for this. 'Oh Sony sold a million units! Must be because of CoD and BF!' , 'Must be because this gen went on for too long!'. How about giving credit where its due. The fact that Sony sold this many units in spite of a weak exclusive launch tells us that they did everything else right.

  • People know what Sony studios can do, especially after playing TLOU this year. They know games will come.
  • People know every single multiplatform game IS and WILL be better on the PS4.
  • Sony has a service that is giving out 9 free games across three different platforms every month. Along with discounts. Some of these games are barely a few months old, others are brand new.
  • They had the cheaper console. Only $399 which is cheaper than what PS2 launched at when inflation is taken into account.
  • They did not insult their own core audience by focusing on TV, Kinect and Online-DRM. Things core gamers have denounced every single time they come out.
  • They know who their audience is. They know who buys a console at launch, and it's not Stacy's mom.

There were a lot of people who said focusing on the core gamer is foolish and is not going to bring many games. They all look like idiots now. None more so than MS who lost their main audience to Sony. At least in NA. Just like Sony did last gen.

Just stop with this neutral gamer bullshit and give the credit where its due.

And lastly, MS has said their preorder numbers are twice that of the 360. They will have a decent launch. They are also launching worldwide simultaneously so they may even sell more units in one day.

Sorry, but I'm not rooting for anyone in the hardware race so I have absolutely no interest in "giving credit where it's due". Give credit where it's due, oh my God, haha.

People buy GAMES at launch of a GAMING system. Has anyone picked up a PS4 and not a single game? So these games, whatever they are, are obviously driving sales. Long-term reasoning is fine, but you bought it that day for SOMETHING. That's why not everyone buys consoles at launch, but rather wait until there's a compelling game(s) out.

As for your bulletpoint list, it's highly unlikely that most of this is widespread common knowledge, so I just have to wholeheartedly disagree.

It's an impressive number especially since the console seems to be readily available. Sony must've shipped a ton of them which is astounding considering past console launches when shortages were common and sales numbers were far lower than this.

It's interesting to ponder what exactly is the catalyst for such a success. The exclusive software launch lineup is weak even by launch standards, but at the same time, I believe it is the biggest third-party software launch in history. It will be interesting to see what games drove these sales. I suspect it is mostly Call of Duty and Battlefield which is a depressing prospect as it potentially signifies the continuation of uninspired and derivative big budget action game sequels.

Also, could it be that the unusual length of the past generation spurred unprecedented demand for new systems?

Last but not least, it will be interesting to see how the Xbox One fares. First instincts tell me that there's no way it'll reach anywhere near these numbers mostly due to the price tag and bad press, but it does have a stronger launch lineup and the Xbox crowd usually proved to be rabid indeed.

Honestly, this looks pretty uninspired.

But with games like Shadowrun Returns, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Project Eternity, Wasteland 2 and Dead State, I think it's safe to say that isometric RPG's are back and quite possibly here to stay.

The ones I saw on Amazon were like $100 or so.... maybe I was looking at an incompatible type?

I'm guessing that you must have seen a SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) which is not SSD (Solid State Drive) at all. And the cheap ones ($100) run at 5400RPM whereas ordinary HDD's run at 7200RPM. So unless you're willing to shell out major cash for a real SSD (which is exponentially faster than both HDD and SSHD), it's actually better to just go with a regular HDD.

FFS, why does every bullshit criticism of old RPG's see 'number crunching' as some integral part of the combat that makes it too difficult? Dungeon Master? Was that full of 'number crunching'? Might and Magic? Gold Box? Ultima? Sure there were stats and modifiers but to speak as if the combat was some arcane thing which the poor 'average gamer' couldn't be able to work out is a load of shit. Actual combat was for the most part simple to execute-either click on the beast or select an attack from a list and the computer does the rest...what's the problem here? That you have to work out what attacks, weapons, spells work best? That's the REAL 'PROBLEM' with old RPG's isn't it ? That you actually had to THINK during combat encounters instead of clickety f-ing click! Right ? "OH NO!, IT'S THAC0! Run boy and girls, he's gonna make our brain hurt!"

Media and developers help reinforce the notion that that we're better off just spamming the left-click button until the world explodes and we're covered in a pile of steaming achievement-bullshit that tells us how great we are and how fantastic it is that we were able to push that left-click button enough to kill Monster #22151551254

Great post. Action fans, just stick with your fucking action games and leave RPG's to be, you know, RPG's.

Well, I think you will be pleased to learn that I just picked up Planescape Torment from GOG for $1,99. I'm not sure when I'll actually play it, but this is one step closer to that. :)

You still need to play Vampire first.

I am actually pleasantly surprised. Shitty launch games always get a pass simply because they're launch games (biggest offenders last gen being Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo), but it seems that some reviewers aren't impressed anymore solely by the fact that this is the start of a new generation.

I can agree at some point, but i think you are giving to much shit to an indie game. I really want to see what Freebird games could do with solid budget at their hands.

Well, cutting it some slack wouldn't be fair to other indie games that managed to be absolutely fantastic with a very small budget as well. And I am definitely interested to see what Freebird can accomplish next. To The Moon is a good game, but they really need to up the ante.

I will also join Lucianu and wholeheartedly recommend The Longest Journey. Absolutely fantastic writing, stellar voice acting, believable characters and great point 'n click gameplay to boot. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
