You don't need to hit the lottery to be able to afford better audio. For less than $350, you can get a nice Audigy ZS sound card plus Creative G500 speakers.

Shoot, I had those speakers so loud, it made the walls vibrate so much, one of the picture frames hanging on the wall fell, hit the floor, and shatter to pieces. Was it worth it? Hell yeah, that's Call of Duty for ya!
