The only thing they can possibly do in an "official word" at this point is to announce a public, transparent reorganization of their Games and Entertainment division that sets up meaningful firewalls between their advertising and editorial divisions, and issue a public apology to Gerstmann.

We know that Eidos did a large ad buy with Gamespot, and then became furious when they saw the text and video reviews for Kane and Lynch. Nobody has disputed that.

We know that Eidos threatened to withold hundreds of thousands of dollars in future advertising from Gamespot. Nobody has disputed that.

We know that Gamespot subsequently edited the text review, and pulled the video review off of the site. CNet does dispute that the text review was edited to come across more favorably to the game, but that is a verifiable lie when you compare the old text to the new text.

We know that after the Thanksgiving week releases, when all of the major editorial and review work has been done for the year, Jeff Gerstmann was unexpectedly locked out of his offices and removed from the premises. This was a senior editor with ten years of service to the organization. Nobody has disputed that

We know that Gerstmann was fired for his reviews. Gamespot does not dispute that. They merely state that there were multiple instances of "tone" (rather than content) that caused him to be fired. It's not that he said negative things about the game, it's that he used negative words in order to say negative things about the game. Got it?

Please watch Gerstmann's video review on YouTube. Regardless of whether you agree with every point in it, the review is absolutely tame and reserved compared to your typical negative movie review. Go look up some of Roger Ebert's stinker reviews for comparison. If we really set our threshold in this industry to say that the "tone" of Gerstamann's Kane and Lynch review is unacceptable, then we will be screwing ourselves out of independent, interesting, editorial content

IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED, READ THE TEXT BELOW. IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN NOT UNDERSTAND OR DECIPHER THE MEANING OF A SENTENCE...IGNORE THIS NOW

THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT - IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED, JEFF WAS SACKED BECAUSE OF THE REVIEW (READ THE TXT BELOW AND READ BETWEEN THE LINES)

gerstmann100-463.jpgWe never know for sure if the commentards are who they claim to be. But one prodigious poster with the new account "gamespot" is telling what reads like a credible insider story -- it's written in editor-speak -- of what happened to ex-CNET GameSpot reviewer Jeff Gerstmann, supposedly fired for low-scoring an advertiser's new game. "Gamespot"'s posts are in need of a 100-word-versioning, but it's Friday so forgettabout it here's the whole thing pasted in. I've bolded the newsy parts.

We're very clear in our review policies that all reviews are vetted by the entire team before they go live - everything that goes up is the product of an entire team's output. Our freelancers are especially guilty of making snide comments, but those are always yanked before the review goes live, because everyone in the office reads these reviews and makes sure they're up to our standards before they get put up.

If there was a problem with his reviews, then it would've been a problem with the entire team. Firing him without telling anyone implies that anyone else on this team can be fired at the drop of a hat as well, because none of us are writing any differently or meaner or less professionally than we were two years ago before the management changed. I'm sure management wants to spin this as the G-Man being unprofessional to take away from the egg on their face that results after a ten-year employee gets locked out of his office and told to leave the premises and then no one communicates anything to us about it until the next day.

This management team has shown what they're willing to do. Jeff had ten years in and was **** locked out of his office and told to leave the building.

What you might not be aware of is that GS is well known for appealing mostly to hardcore gamers. The mucky-mucks have been doing a lot of "brand research" over the last year or so and indicating that they want to reach out to more casual gamers. Our last executive editor, Greg Kasavin, left to go to EA, and he was replaced by a suit, Josh Larson, who had no editorial experience and was only involved on the business side of things. Over the last year there has been an increasing amount of pressure to allow the advertising teams to have more of a say in the editorial process; we've started having to give our sales team heads-ups when a game is getting a low score, for instance, so that they can let the advertisers know that before a review goes up. Other publishers have started giving us notes involving when our reviews can go up; if a game's getting a 9 or above, it can go up early; if not, it'll have to wait until after the game is on the shelves.

I was in the meeting where Josh Larson was trying to explain this firing and the guy had absolutely no response to any of the criticisms we were sending his way. He kept dodging the question, saying that there were "multiple instances of tone" in the reviews that he hadn't been happy about, but that wasn't Jeff's problem since we all vet every review. He also implied that "AAA" titles deserved more attention when they were being reviewed, which sounded to all of us that he was implying that they should get higher scores, especially since those titles are usually more highly advertised on our site.

I know that it's all about the money, and hey, I like money. I like advertising because it pays my salary. Unfortunately after Kasavin left the church-and-state separation between the sales teams and the editorial team has cracked, and with Jeff's firing I think it's clear that the management now has no interest at all in integrity and are instead looking for an editorial team that will be nicer to the advertisors.

When companies make games as downright contemptible as Kane and Lynch, they deserve to be called on it. I guess you'll have to go to Onion or a smaller site for objective reviews now, because everyone at GS now thinks that if they give a low score to a high-profile game, they'll be **** Everyone's **** scared and we're all hoping to get Josh Larson removed from his position because no one trusts him anymore. If that doesn't happen then look for every game to be Game of the Year material at GameSpot

But, you can look now. I guess as usual, GAMESPOT missed this good news.

LINK>>>http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/Q6F3J6X8

CHAPTER 1:-

The head of the Microsoft Xbox operation in Australia, David Mclean, who is becoming famous for what he doesn't say rather than what he does, is set to hear from yet another very "angry" Xbox 360 customer who is so angry with Mclean and his operation that he has packed up his second broken Xbox and shipped it directly to him with a letter that says: "Microsoft suks you can keep your busted Xbox". He also said that he will never deal with Microsoft again.

This year Microsoft has allocated over $1.3 billion to fix faulty Xbox 360 consoles with retailers reporting a console failure rate of up to 30%.

Marcel Ollmann of New Zealand claims in a letter to Mclean that he is now on his second Xbox 360 and like a lot of other Xbox 360 users who have had problems with Microsoft over their gaming consoles, it is not the failure of the Xbox that galls him but the "shocking" service that Ollmann received when he attempted to get his first Xbox 360 fixed.

He has also had major problems with Microsoft support and Microsoft Live. In a blunt letter to Mclean he states: "It is fair to say that for the past year Microsoft has treated me like s**t".

"Rather than following New Zealand law and providing replacements at a point of sale I was forced to call the Xbox support and get a resolution through a toll-free helpdesk. After jumping through various hoops over the phone with representatives that struggled with basic English I boxed my Xbox360 and at my expense sent it to Microsoft. From this point on, my xbox360 was never seen again. The helpdesk had no record of my console being received or processed for repair. I wasted countless hours trying to get a resolution from Microsoft. The calls to the Microsoft helpdesk were so frustrating that I never wanted to deal with them again".

CHAPTER 2:-

He added "When I started jumping up and down at the xbox.com forums with my friends Microsoft responded by sending me a new Xbox 360."

"I assumed that this was a new Xbox360 and everything appeared to be ok. I then purchased a HD-DVD drive to attach to my console. Then the new Xbox360 crashed and upon restarting exhibited the three red rings of death".

After several attempts at loading games and movies I have been unable to get the system to work. In a letter to Mclean he claims that "at this point I think it is fair to say that I have simply had enough and as such I don't want my xbox360 anymore. I don't want to call your helpdesk and waste countless hours not getting a speedy or effective resolution. I don't want to return my console to your "repair centre" in Australia for it to be lost again. As I mentioned before to countless drones at your helpdesk, the level of service that I have received from Microsoft is appalling".

In his letter to Mclean Ollmann has also complained about the Microsoft Xbox Live service. He writes "I used to purchase game, movie and TV downloads from Xbox live. Then one day, the whole thing disappeared on me. The console no longer allowed me to purchase anything to do with movies and TV programs online. That was like a kick in my face. You really don't want my money anymore?

CHAPTER 3:-

"Recently my Xbox live account was suspended so I called the dreaded helpdesk to resolve the problem.
I informed them that I didn't want to renew my membership because of how crippled the Xbox live marketplace had become. They said that I had no choice. When I said that I only wanted a silver membership after my gold membership expired, they wanted me to pay US$50 to revert my gold membership to a free silver one because they claimed "that is the only way the system works".

He concludes in his letter to Mclean "Please find my dying or rather dead xbox360 attached to this letter. I'm sure it's safe to say this is my last purchase from Microsoft in my lifetime".

As expected Mclean was not available to comment. However he was available to comment on Microsoft's success with Halo 3.
