The reason for our sky being blue is due to the rayleigh scattering. AS light moves through the earths atmosphere the longer wavelengths get through. However much of the shorter wavelength is absorbed by the gas molecules. the absorbed blue light is then radiated in all different dirrections. It gets scattered all around the sky, which ever direction you look some of this scatteredblue light reaches you. sinceyou see the blue light from everywhere overhead the sky looks blue.

So space is black because it is a vacuum.
