Thanks for the review Kevin. I was somewhat hyped for Destiny when it was revealed and disappointed once I discovered it wouldn't be available in neither the systems I own (Wii U and PC). However, with time, I begin to suspect there was something missing with this game and, as such, I am not too surprised with your assessment. However it is disappointing to see Bungie, a developer who always delivered in the past, to stumble in their inaugural game on their new phase as an independent studio.
@shingui5 I believe games are an excellent media when there are multiple story lines that can be picked by the player or the case of the Walking Dead, where the story was fixed but you could mold the personality of the main character and be satisfied to create a role model to Clementine. Games such as the Last of Us does not give me an opportunity of choice in terms of story and thus I would rather enjoy this kind of linear experience in a more suitable media, such as a book or a movie.
All that said, The Last of Us' story was brilliant as well as the acting.
@FBohler Naugthty Dog is now specialized in doing great cinematic experiences and there are a lot of people that enjoy this kind of thing. Personally, I think their games are usually lacking in gameplay and level design and, because they are games, the stories suffers from pacing. I would much prefer to watch their scripts turned into movies, as it would be a better media to enjoy the kind of linear experience they produce.
@The_Deepblue The problem with that review is that anyone who played the game realized that Tom never learned how to use the bow. Latter the review was updated to retract from this. Still, people was suspicious about his remarks on the motion controls as it appeared that, because he didn't liked them, he may not even took the trouble of learning them properly. At the podcast, he revealed they worked about 80% of the time, which is far less than my own experience (95%+), which support this interpretation.
He also point out the excessive padding and hand holding, which didn't bothered me at all, but I believe his remarks over motion controls, including the fact he didn't understood how to use the bow, tainted his review to many Gamespot readers.
Tom could really improve his argument by stopping bitching the other games in the series.
It is mostly a question of opinion. He likes the fact this game have features similar to the original The Legend of Zelda and, thus, he is happy. In the other hand, there are people that don't enjoy open world design, or may not agree with him regarding what he called padding in other games, or even do require the assistance to complete the game as they are not as hardcore gamers as most Gamespot readers. To those people, Tom's speech is ineffective, as he sounds more like a grumpy old game journalist full of hate of games that don't follow his own likings.
Tom, I know you are better than the fanboy in the video. Time to step up, man.
