I havent played the game in so long, but a few tips i can give is first, decide what kind of game you want to play.  Do you want to win with culture or just destroy every other civilization? Second, dont under any circumstances build a city without planning and looking at the terrain is and what it can give you for production.  In civ3, you have to build city very fast at the beginning, but if that city cant build anything...  Third, improve the terrain as much as you can.  And fourth, knowledge is power, so try to put alot of ressources in scientific research, unless i'm at war, i try to get taxes so i get a bit of cash for rainy days, the rest goes into research.  The should be loads of civ3 community websites to help you also.

On consoles, i think it was Duck Hunt and Mario at a friends place, then we got an awesome pc at home (1mb RAM and 30meg HDD :D) and the first on that one would be Dangerous Dave, or maybe alley cat, not sure. Then came LHX, Duke Nukem (the original), Test Drive 2, Pool of radiance, Gunship 2000, Transport Tycoon, etc.

I really  miss those days sometimes. Games are too complicated now, i just want to sit and play the game, not have to read the manual for a half hour before... :)

I would add Syndicate for this list.  I was never able to complete the game, just got too frustrated after a while.

Sacred and also Divine Divinity are pretty good games, worth looking into.
