hey, i wanna know why does the YLOD occur?

is it over heating or hardware problem?

salil_707
From what I've read most YLODs are caused by overheating or just normal wear-and-tear. The solder connecting the CPU or GPU comes loose but can be reconnected by heating up that area with a heat gun. Some YLODs are caused by some sort of problem with the power supply. I think there might be another suspected reason, but it's at least those two. There's no single definitive reason for all YLODs though, so I don't even know if the fix I'm going to try will work. Just ordered the Arctic Silver thermal compound - almost ready to begin the operation.

I hope it doesn't happen to you, bam! Just to be on the safe side, you should be in the habit of backing up your saves regularly. I know I will from now on. I should've learned my lesson when a Borderlands glitch corrupted my lvl 50 soldier (so many awesome guns - gone), but I all I did was start backing up my Borderlands saves. I was looking forward to playing Heavy Rain, too.

Yes, sad times when I can no longer pwn fools in MW2. Thanks for the support. I picked up everything I need for the fix today with the exception of a thermal compound because I couldn't find Arctic Silver. I'll order that online somewhere and once I get around to operating on my PS3 I'll post the results. It sounds like this is a temporary fix at best, so if/when it breaks down a second time, I'll post again so other people can get a rough idea of how long it lasts. As long as I can get it running long enough to back up the HDD it won't be a complete loss. To anyone reading this, I strongly recommend backing up your HDD or individual saves. Don't learn the hard way and wait until it's too late!

I just got YLoD today and I decided not to bother fixing it for this exact reason. At least if I get a Slim I know it'll work without constant maintenance. In saying this, good luck dude. I hope it all works out well for you.RandomBeast
Thanks man. The way I see it, I might as well give it a shot and try to fix it myself for $40 instead of buying a whole new unit, and I get the satisfaction (and aggravation) of fixing it myself. Plus I don't want to lose all my saves! But wait, can you just transport the HDD from one system to another? Great sig btw. In Tyler We Trust.

Hey, I don't mean to thread hi-jack or anything, but where exactly does the YLOD show up at? I recently got a PS3 a few months ago, and I'm just wondering where it would show up at.

Dekonizer
You mean which light is it? It's the small rectangular light on top, the same one that's red during standby and blue when the system's on. If you just got it a few months ago you should be good for quite a while (assuming it's new). I've had this one for years and aside from the occasional freeze I haven't had any problems. I don't know GSpot's policy on linking to other sites, but here's a YouTube link, you can see for yourself - /watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU

Mine lasted best of a month before it died again.Dan_Lero
That's not very good at all, but like you said, a different problem came up so hopefully I'll have a bit more luck. I've read this fix can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to... well I don't know what the high end would be. It may be on borrowed time at this point, but that's why I plan to backup everything, just in case. I should have been doing that anyway. Thanks for reaffirming my choice of Arctic Silver.

Yeah, it's an old fat 60 GB. It's worked great until now, no serious problems whatsoever. Do you guys know how long this fix usually lasts?

MW2 froze after playing for only about 10 min the other day. Turned the PS3 back on and got the YLOD! After searching for a solution online, I've decided to take it apart and fix it myself using YouTube tutorials from users gilksy1 and djwhetzel. I never had a warranty anyway and I'm not paying Sony $150 to fix it and lose all my saves on top of it. I'm also going to back up my HDD on my external hard drive once I get it running again. I think I have a good handle on the procedure from the tutorial vids, but to anyone who's fixed this before, any tips? What kind of thermal compound should I pick up? I guess Arctic Silver is supposed to be good?
