Hmm, well you can't use any retail version on steam. The CD-Key Format used in Steam is different. So unless you get a retail copy of the game that says "Prior to playing the game, you must install Steam and activate this product via Internet" then you can't use the game on Steam. I think an example of this is all of Valve's games (HL2, CSS, etc)
There is no difference to the game content except the steam version uses the steam app to query servers. But, if you want to have the Steam features of backing up games, retrieving them and auto updating then buy the game on Steam.
Thanks for the replies. I think I will try a shooter first but unfortunately UT3 and Gears are going to be a bit much for my present system I think. Some newer games are still fine but those two as you mentioned kind of push the envelope so next system will see me playing at least Gears if not UT3 also. I wish I still had my two copies of Serious Sam 2nd encounter. I forget why I even had two, maybe one came with a card or something. That game was a blast coop just to run and gun in. Obviously that's not something you'd spend a lot of time at but for a first night doing it, it would be great as its so simple to just jump in and go blast tons and tons of crazy bad guys. Too bad that wasn't on Steam. I'd grab it.linmukai
Gears of War has pretty high requirements, but I'm sure UT3 should be able to run on your system
Minimum Requirements for UT3:
Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista
2.0+ GHZ Single Core Processor
512 Mbytes of System RAM
NVIDIA 6200+ or ATI Radeon 9600+ Video Card
8 GB of Free Hard Drive Spac
Hopefully yours if over that border. I really recommend UT3 personally. If not, then they're other popular online shooters you and ur bro can go for. i.e: CSS, UT2004, Team Fortress 2
Since your a fan of shooters, I'd suggest UT3 or Gears of War, specifically, because they both have so-op campaign modes. System requirements might be steep., both are uniquely great games
[QUOTE="dboy7"]I say chip in an extra 10 and go for CS Source. A lot more people are playing it and plus it looks great.G013M
I thought it was still the other way around?
? CS 1.6 is 10 and CSS is 20.
