@Hyodra @DjKofee It seems the apple works if you have a higher concentration of first civilization DNA. Desmond has this, therefore he can use the apple while others might not be able to. I don't know that any particular apple is more significant than others, any of them would work for the Templar's goals and it seems that what Desmond has will work for the Assassin's goals. I think the important thing to note here is that there are now two known locations for pieces of Eden.
@sgt_F79 I'm talking about the actual Assassins group. While the amount of focus on keeping Muslims on the Shia'a path would always be dependent on the leader at that particular time, they did stray very far from that focus and, as I was saying, were at times willing to give up their faith entirely to insure their survival in a more political fashion.
Another aspect of the actual group that I thought was interesting in how it influenced the first game was, like you mention, them doing everything with the clear intention that the end result is their death. Assassinations were generally done in public with small weapons so as to insure that the assassin would also be killed after they hit their target. Obviously it would have made for a much different game if your character got killed after the first assassination, but the idea was there of it being done in public right in the middle of things.
The first game also made mention of Salah ad-Din, who is interesting relative to the assassins because they made several attempts on his life. If memory serves, I believe he actually marched on Masyaf and they eventually ended in a truce. The crusades would have ended quite a bit different had they ever succeeded, as he was the leader that managed to drive the crusaders back until all they claimed was Acre. Not that that lasted long after his death though, but it was the last time the crusaders ever had a strong grasp on the holy land.
@sgt_F79 An interesting addition to that, while Hasan ibn As-Sabah had started the group to "protect" the Shia'a Muslims (Seljuks were pretty much killing them off at that point), by the time the first Assassin's Creed took place they were already more of a political group rather than religious. Their leader around then was known as "the old man of the mountain", and he was actually trying to form an alliance with the crusaders saying that his people would convert to Christianity. To show the faith of his followers, he ordered two of them to leap from the top of a tower... something that was clearly used as a key element in the Assassin's Creed series.
The other thing I find amusing is that they were started as a group to oppose the Seljuks. But by the time we get to Revelations, we have Seljuk assassins.
