I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, I recall playing it something like 10 years ago (and it being fairly old even then).

It's a top-down 2D space shooter, the levels (generally free-roaming, but sometimes races) are generated from files you pick off your hard drive. You get money by defeating enemies, which you can use to buy upgrades and fix your ship between levels.

Between stages the monitor on which you use your money gives you a status update (eg. "You are in fine/sorry/etc state, Jagazaar").

I'm assuming it's probably a DOS game, but all my efforts to find it on wikipedia or freeware/abandonware websites brought up nothing.

Can anybody please help me with this? You'd earn my eternal thanks :)

Sorry for the late reply, been busy.

Well bugger, was hoping to avoid a trip to customer service, looks like that's inevitable though. Thank you both for your help, in any case! :)

Hi, recently I've had a few problems with my console, and was wondering if anybody else has experienced something similar.

When I play I tend to do so for extended periods of time (as in, I'll leave my console on for most of the day, and sometimes overnight). This hasn't seemed to cause many issues, and indeed I've done it all the time with my 5 year-old full-size PS2 and it still works more or less perfectly. The problems started about 2 and a half months ago. While playing a game, a noticed a number of small flickering vertical lines in a row on the screen, it wasn't immediately slap-you-in-the-face noticable, but it was definately there. At first I put it down to the game being terrible (Bomberman Land Wii :P), despite being new. Then I played Twilight Princess and some other games since then, and the exact same thing happened. It bugged me, but it wasn't enough to cause me any major concern.

Tonight, I just moved my Wii back into its usual spot after a party and fired it up after a few days of inactivity. I changed the game after doing a few other things for a couple of hours, then went to the Disc Channel. Nothing happened, but the lines were flickering worse than ever. For 2 minutes. I ejected the game (which it spat out immediately with no 'thinking' needed), put in a different one. Same thing. Tried it again with a Gamecube game. Nothing. I tried going into the Wii Settings, and it froze on a black screen. The power button on the Wiimote did nothing except turn off the Wiimote. I gave it a hard shutdown with the Power button, turned it back on, everything worked. I'm stumped.

Possible causes I can think of:

  • Aforementioned continual use
  • While standing vertical, it has accidentally been knocked over a number of times. This never caused my games to freeze, or the console to do anything wierd however
  • The new space it's been in for the last 5 months is very enclosed, (area is about 2.5 times as tall as the console is wide) and it lies on its side. Doesn't seem much hotter than consoles usually do though.
  • Occasionally I have to move (albiet carefully) it while the disc is playing. I know it's not recommended, but I've never had issues with doing it before with either console, and all my discs are in excellent condition.

My Wii is about a year and a half old, for the record. If anyone can give me some advice as to what's wrong and if there's anything I can do to fix it, I'd really appreciate it :)

None. It has never worked and it will never work. Other than a few Star Wars games and a couple of Batman games based on Burton's Batman and Batman Returns, games based on movies have always sucked and they will always suck.LordQuorthon

A game based on a movie (well, more a book I guess, but still) effectively created a genre. Dune 2 is generally credited with being one of the first major RTS titles. And of course Goldeneye set an entirely new standard for console FPS. I quite liked Chronicles of Riddick, but I think that was a prequel so I'm not sure if it truly counts though.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Even my cruddy system with its on-board graphics card can run it (albiet not silky-smooth, but that's not the game's fault), and it still looks pretty. Practically infinite replay value and value for money, it's just cool to pick out one of your favourite songs and see it translated like that. Many different ways to play it what with several characters organised into 3 different difficulty levels.

If that was all it'd still be great, but the inclusion of achievements, scores, bonuses, medals, and AN ONLINE LEADERBOARD FOR EVERY SONG EVER PLAYED makes it just one of the best and most original games I've seen. And I don't think it was even hyped like many of the big-name, big-budget 'blockbuster' titles. They've outdone themselves, plain and simple.

Now my ultimate hope is that Q Entertainment or someone like uses this technology and applies it to make a dynamic on-rails shooter in the same vein as Rez. I'd even get out of my sheer apathy and upgrade my computer for that.

Nocturne and the DDS games have no storyline relation to each other. DDS 1 & 2 are considerably easier than Nocturne, but don't have anywhere near the level of customisation. However, they have voice acting and better characters (IMO). I'd suggest you start with DDS 1 & 2 so you can ease yourself into Nocturne, unless you're already a JRPG veteran. Just my opinion though.

I have a lot of favourites, but The Legendary Theme (electric version) from Gitaroo Man is just downright awesome. The rest of the level is cool too, but fast forward it to 2:30 if you just want to hear the actual song.

Hardest game I ever played would probably be Ghouls 'n Ghosts. My God was that game hard.GabuEx

Not to mention the the last level held probably the nastiest surprise I've ever seen in a game. At least the SNES one did, I never actually played the original yet.

Without question, God of War. It has a much more dumbed down and far less rewarding combat system than Devil May Cry, 3 simplistic bosses with one or two repetitive attacks, a lot of unmemorable music and generic enemies, and not much incentive to play again after you've beaten it once. But hey, it does have pretty graphics, a ton of violence, and a hidden sex minigame! BEST PS2 GAME EVER FTW!!!! :|
