3ds sales are also declining which is why ninty never even released them this month and the situation is only going to get worse because like u said the handheld market is going to become more obsolete as smartphones get even more powerful.
When Nintendo does things like make plastic toy figures, it only reinforces their stigma as a kiddie company. Sure they're making money, but it's never going to take away from the fact that they will always be perceived as a company geared towards children, which is why most people don't take them seriously.
Backstreet Boys makes more money than any doctor or fireman, but doesn't change the fact that their music is catered towards squeamish teenybopper fangirls, not to mention their music sucks.
