Yeah, if you are forced to install Origin for some EA titles, there are going to be 45 million users registered. Compare that with Steam's 35 million ACTIVE users. There could be a whole lot more users on Steam that aren't active, like my Steam account for example (console fanboy)
This would be even worse if your internet connection drops or is poor. You could be playing a game by yourself (i.e. single player), then your internet connection drops and you are forced out of the game entirely!
