As much fun and awesome that it would be to travel with characters from different worlds I just don't believe that they should do that. The main reason that they don't travel in the first place is because of the fact that they don't know of the existence of other worlds besides their own. Even though they met with Sora and co. they still don't know that other worlds exist at most they just think that Sora and co. are strange. So as much as I would like to take characters with me as I traveled to different worlds I just don't think that SE should do that.
Just aim for the log that is near the center of the pond. That is where the biggest fish always is. Thats how it is on the N64 version I haven't played the Gamecube version.
