What are some good local multiplayer games, with player-vs-player, for the Xbox 360?

I am looking for stuff like Mario Kart (racing & battlemode), Tetris, fighting games, puzzle games etc.

I realize this stuff is more readily available on other platforms, but my friend has a 360 and that's what he has, and no internet access.

Not to keen on shooters and other 3d-perspective games.

Surely there's Tetris on Xbox??

Is there a retail-disc compilation of XBLive mini games?

I have tried Google but I only get Halo'esque recommendations.

Some mp3s produce an error on the Wii photochannel song player. I don't know what the exact error message is, but the Wii is unable to play the specific mp3 player, and then greys it out on the song list. All other mp3 files play fine off the SD card.

The file itself plays on PC just fine, and various mp3 players.

Details of the file:

Size: 14598016 bytes
Header found at: 6016 bytes
Length: 365 seconds
MPEG-1 layer 3
320kbit, approx. 13967 frames
44100Hz Joint Stereo
CRCs: No, Copyrighted: No
Original: No, Emphasis: None

I am pretty sure I have played many 320kbps, mpeg1 layer 3 files before, on the Wii.

Anyone experience a similar thing?

My Wii is collecting dust for the following reasons:

-No dedicated MP3 player
I would use it more if it had a quickly accessible MP3 player.

-Batteries die too fast
Battery usage needs to improve on the Wiimote. I think batteries get eaten up too fast.

-No USB harddrive support
I have plenty of external drives, why can't I simply plug them in and access media files off them?

-Infrequent premium titles
They are taking their sweet time coming out with 8-9 out of 10 rated games. Seems like only once every 6 months there's a game worthy of retail purchase.

-Can't find free wifi
This has nothing to do with Nintendo, it's out of their control. Anyhow, I would use my Wii more if I could get free Wifi in my neighbourhood. I can't. And I don't have a PC or regular internet either. I had free Wifi for about 2 weeks in the beginning before the it got locked, lol. I wish there would be an official product to increase the Wii wifi range.

The Wii is only getting solid gaming sessions maybe once a month... when visitors come over.

The only other console I own is an SNES, packed away in a box.

I used to be a gamer, but not anymore.. I have other, REAL, interests. But if the above things were fixed or improved, I would probably use the Wii more.

Not making enough mature games is one thing...

HOW ABOUT MAKING MORE GAMES, PERIOD.

How long can Mario Galaxy and Metroid Corruption last for me?

I am already bored to hell, and none of those mini and party games interest me.

Feels like it's gonna be 5 good titles a year, and that's it.

1. SSBB

2. Mario Kart Wii

3. No More Heroes

4. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams

5. Endless Ocean

toadster101

Yea you got it on the nail I think. This covers Q1.

Only 1 and 2 are in my books.

It's pretty tough though, look at the release schedules for every week until march. Absolutely nothing good coming out.

PS3 and Xbox are getting big hits coming out all the way till E3.

It was fun in the arcade, and I'm sure it's still fun on the Wii. The graphics (and sound) are simply not of this generation, that's all. But it's still probably fun.

Look at the bright side, Nintendo is allowing a game were real persons are shot with real weapons... now we're making progress!!!

You want a list. I'm looking to in the 3rd party:
Okami

What is that? Wasn't that some artsy Japanese game on the PS2? Is it just a port with the same graphics?

Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratastok

Never heard of it. Sounds like some kind of Japanese RPG game, a genre which I usually don't like, or have time/patience for.

Final Fanatasy Crystal Chronicles Crystal Bearers

Never really got into Final Fantasy ever, but I can appreciate that is a very deep franchise. If I had the time/patience for an RPG, I would probably get this first.

Spore

Now you're talkin!!!

Mushroom men

What ?

King Story

What ?

Civilization Revolution

Possibly, but will get my strategy fix with Spore.

Monster Hunter 3 (maybe)

What ?

Zack & Wiki (I'll buy it soon)

Tried it at a friends place. I didn't like it that much. Some is off about it. Well designed game though.

Trauma Center New Blood (I might buyit soon)

Tried it as well, I thought I was going to have lots of fun cutting people up, but actually my enthusiasm hit a brick wall having to go through all these cinematics, story and transition screens. Besides the anime art and cheesy/poor speech really turned me off. Too Japanese.

Baroque

What ?

Fragile

What ?

Oboro Murasama Youtuden (Hope it's coming)

What ?

Opoona

... What ?

This is what I would like to see of 3rd-party:

-Spore - you got that one right, can't wait for it.
-More strategy games, because we got a fluid pointer now. Yes, still don't have high-res enough to view large battlefields, but the genre can work pretty good now.
-Tennis simulation from EA
-Hockey simulation from EA
-Baseball simulation from EA
-Basketball simulation from EA
-Football simultion from EA
-Soccer simultion from EA
-Golf simulation from EA
-Yes, yes, yes there are already some of these sports games, but you can't say that they are actually using the potential of the Wii when it comes to the controller, come on. The releases so far have been quick-bucks for EA, that's all.
-Unique, wii-only, truely-wii-optimized versions of all the current popular shooter franchises. So far we got Far Cry already, but we can all agree was a quick-buck stupid mistake pushed out the door, and they can do better.
-MORE SHOOTERS PERIOD. It's proven that the genre works on consoles, and that the Wii actually makes it that much easier (to control). Metroid Corruption has proven this, and Red Steel has shown innovation and mistakes to learn from.
-TETRIS type games - would someone come out with Tetris for this generation already?
-GTA and family: RockStar should be bringing their games too Wii, yet another market.
-RACING/DRIVING games - where are they.

What is all that Japanese hub-bub you're talking about?

Looking at that screenshot gave me an idea...

What about a camera add-on that could be used to record you and use the captured video in a game?

Imagine, you could record yourself and your friends dressed up as thugs, then put it into a shooter game like this.

Obviously, aside from the camera, the next major issue of course is how to key-out the background of the captured video so just the character shape is seen in the game. You could instruct the user to record themselves with a bare wall in the background (most people have white painted walls in their homes, no?) and combine it with a combination of colour keying and/or smart area selection (like the Smart Selection tool in Photoshop CS3), and you can seperate the background.

Imagine all the fun you and your friends could have recording animations and poses for use in games.

What about a "Mario You" where you replace mario with your own self running and jumping.

althoughI loved the time travel idea hasnt that already been done with partners in time?rendai

What is partners in time?

All I know is Mario 1,2,3, Super Mario World, Mario 64, and Mario Galaxy.

Aside from these titles I am aware of, I do not really directly know about all the off-shoot games involving Princess, Toad, Donkey Kong, Luigi, Yoshi... are you saying time travel has already been done in one of those games?

When I look back across that series, there hasn't been a real serious Mario game with time-travel and slow-mo stuff. This seems to me a natural direction now that "Galaxy" is done.

Imagine these elements:

-A father-time type figure that either needs to be rescued (to save the world, of course), is a guide for mario (helping him in his adventure through time), or my favourite... father-time is corrupted and becomes an evil villain that screws up the universe and mario fights in the final battle.

-TONS of fresh new gameplay mechanics with wormholes, lightspeed-whatever, time travel, time zones, stopping time, matrix slow-mo stuff, time limits and countdowns that have a more direct affect on gameplay rather than simply meaning a +/- points or lives, etc (for example, the longer you take to complete a level... the larger koopa's grow and the harder it is to beat them).

-It's really open-ended. Mario can visit alien worlds (LIKE OURS), and different periods of history.

-THIS GAME CAN VISIT HOW THE MARIO WORLD CAME TO BE. None of us really know about that stuff do we. Where do mushrooms come from? What were bowsers doing before they were able to fly pirate ships around?

"But Wii doesn't have shaders like Xbox 1, and Xbox was capable of pulling off 720p."

Maybe you should say something like "The Wii doesn't seem to be capable of producing texture/material/surface effects like the original Xbox".

Who knows if the Wii has components actually called "shaders" at all, and why does it matter, since these effects could be generated by the CPU. Regardless, the Wii probably does have "shaders" aka some-kind-of-common-set-of-graphic-effects-components because of the ATI GPU technology (or was it nVidia?).

Speaking of shaders on the Wii...

In Mario Galaxy I saw many instances of a fur shader. Bee mario for instance, some particular enemies too. If you can get the camer close enough you can see some great real time fuzzyness.

Also, you get various shiny/reflection type shaders everywhere. Also lots of glowing things, isn't there?

One obvious thing that seems to be missing across Wii games is BUMP MAPPING. Maybe it's there but it's too subtle to notice. Maybe the system isn't capable of it and takes too much of a performance hit. Maybe the developers so far haven't seen a need for it, i.e. it doesn't add anything to their particular game.
