Awesome! Thanks for the tip. Played this a long time ago and loved it then. Been on a retro-gaming craze lately, playing Darklands and Sword of the Samurai... just one more to remind me of what life was like pre-mortgage.

X2 The Threat, definately. It will work with your PC specs and it really has what you're looking for. While there is a storyline, you can go absolutely anywhere you want and do anything you want and don't need to deal with the story if you don't want to. You can do what you want, trade, fight, build an economic empire, or simply fly around to wherever you feel. I think it's even more open ended than Freelancer. I wouldn't go the Mass Effect route as it is much more restricted than what you're looking for..

Oh yeah, and my last build lasted me 5 years, though i couldn't play stuff at the top end, graphically, for the last 2 years I had it.. Then again, the graphics card was not upgraded from the first one I bought for it. Depends on whether you care if you can see shadows and bloom effects or not. Really, you can turn all that stuff off on most games and they still look fine, but you did ask for how long you could play with it maxed out... That's actually a tough question because it depends on how technology progresses and whether or not game makers use the fancy new bells and whistles that come with any new supercharged card which comes out. I've been away from aggressive builds for a long time, but I don't know, I figure you sepnd $1000 and maybe you get 2 years outta it before you need a graphics upgrade if you wanna max out everything. Don't know for sure, though...

Like others have said, build it yourself and you can easily get a good rig for under $1000. Of course, this is assuming you don't wayt an 27" monitor or anything crazy like that. Don't buy Alienware (as has been said before) as you can build your own without all the stupid LEDs for 1/3 of the price. Just do a little research and head over to Newegg, buy your parts and when you get them start building... you'll have a brand new PC in about an hour (including Windows installation time).
