@naryanrobinson: It's pretentious, is what it is. The developers wanted to make this story about how terrible it is to play shooter video games and how awful and sadistic players are for doing these things in game, while at the same time not giving them any other option but to use WP.

I've never really liked Don't Starve, it just dumps you into a world explaining nothing about your objectives or the mechanics and just leaves you to try and fumble around without any way of knowing that you're going to end up dying to something you couldn't have prepared for because you didn't know how to prepare for it.

@HAWK9600: Sadly that's not necessarily an indicator of quality when video games are concerned.

Something interesting to note is that a lot of these games failed to sell well, despite being praised by critics. You don't normally associate cult classics with critical acclaim.

@x_hedon: Yes, the game reviewed well. What's your point? It was such a flop when it released that it led to the closure of Majesco.

@naryanrobinson: Lord of the Rings and Dark Souls both enjoy wide mainstream appeal, far beyond "cult" followings. And the absence of dedicated communities that discuss cult classics aren't evidence of a lack of following. Games with cult followings are things like XIII and Psychonauts pre-Steam release. I'm with you on Spec Ops being overrated, if you look into the history of the game's development and listen to the interviews with the developers, it becomes really apparent that the writers were trying to make a political statement first and foremost.

@id0ntkn0w7: I won't debate you on the merits of the CGI, both because I don't think there was a great deal wrong with it and because criticizing the technical proficiency of 20-year old graphics is aiming for low-hanging fruit. Re: the villains, Nute Gunray was a figurehead, not the actual villain. So he doesn't have to be "intimidating". By the same token, taxation was NEVER the focus of the conflict, it was just the most convenient pretext for one side of a controlled conflict, manipulated by Palpatine. So I don't think either of those hold water. The racial things I don't suppose I can dispute outright, but I can refer you to Armin Shimerman's comments on people who dismiss the Ferengi as Jewish caricatures.

I am curious though, what didn't you like about the costumes? And what do you mean by "characterization" and "character choices"?

@id0ntkn0w7: This is what I'm talking about. Nobody is going to defend the Gungans or Jake Lloyd or the romance, but the rest of what you listed is just nitpicking and pure opinions. People expected Star Wars to be incapable of doing any wrong, so they were disappointed by the prequels not being masterpieces. That doesn't make them spiritual successors to Plan 9.

@cboye18: That would be a complete slap in the face to the lore, the fans, and the series as a whole. Which is why I honestly wouldn't put it past Disney to make it happen at this point.
