[QUOTE="DJ_Lae"]Either your CPU is soldered to the motherboard of your laptop, which will make upgrading next to impossible, or you'll find it extremely hard to find a reasonably inexpensive replacement online, as notebook processors are rare on their own and far costlier than desktop ones. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=759&N=2010340759&SpeTabStoreType=1 Yours is Socket P from what I can find out online, and the cheapest one is $220 for a relatively minor bump in performance.Buttons1990

Exactly... Laptops aren't like Desktops... It isn't as simple as plopping the CPU into a socket and locking it in place... In most cases, Laptops have a motherboard built specifically for that model and the GPU/CPU is built into the motherboard... You can't just take it out and replace it...

Right right. My previous laptop was a Toshiba Satellite -- and other than some memory upgrades, I couldn't do anything with it (it's now my work computer). The Aspire, from what I've gathered on other forums (sauce: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread227768.html ), IS upgradeable; but I haven't gotten any good recommendations for what I ought to upgrade to.

He means just give it to him because you are going to destry it.

It is extremely difficult to upgrade the cpu of a laptop (and for most it is impossible)...

Plus, I doubt upgrading your CPU will help much... If your CPU is to weak for the game you have in mind, then chances are that the GPU for your laptop is astronomically to weak... I suggest you just build a desktop for like $500-$600 and play games on that... Because you will probably spend just as much if not more replacing your laptop after you break it.

I got what he said, it was just lame.

GPU will work -- GeForce 9600M GT vs. minimum 7600 and recommended 8800 -- it just won't be high quality, but I'm not picky about that.

Look, this is going to happen. Everybody starts off a n00b at something, and the point of asking here now is so I don't have to ask again later. I promise to record the whole thing and post it to YouTube so that if I botch the operation, you guys can have some lulz.

Deal?

Now somebody be constructive and make some hardware recommendations.

Thats some risky business. You could just parcel me the laptop and I'll save it from you're murderous hands.Human-after-all

Pay to ship my laptop off to someone I don't know in the hopes that they know what they're doing and not break it any worse than I would? Jeez, I might as well use Geek Squad.

I'm running an Acer Aspire 8930G with a T6400 2.00GHz CPU. It's been reliable, but I checked the system requirements for OP:DR -- I am up a creek unless I upgrade.

I've never upgraded a CPU for a laptop, although I think I've got the gist of it from online "How-Tos" and the like. Any advice and/or hardware recommendations would be appreciated.

I've been playing games since 1990 when my dad brought home this odd little game called SimCity. A coworker of his said that his son had been enjoying it and suggested that I might, too.

As it turned out, my dad ended up enjoying the game as much as I did.

my tech 1 air factory doesn't have that button, and my tech 2 land factory doesn't have that button to.DarkRecruit
The only way I can see that happening is if you're in the campaign on a mission where those technologies haven't been unlocked. But otherwise if you were able to get a tech 2 land factory, then you should be able to get to tech 3. Also, to address the engineers question: you can't upgrade engineers after they're built. If you want higher tech engineers, you have to produce them from a higher-tech factory. For example: a tech 1 land factory can only produce tech 1 engineers; a tech 2 land factory can produce tech 1 and 2 engineers; and a tech 3 factory can produce all tech level engineers.

Since I can't post in the game forum, and it's been months since I sent them an e-mail without response...DarkRecruit
Given that the game has only been out for two weeks, and the demo but one month, I'll chalk that up to hyperbole. Please use it more judiciously in the future. In any event, no box "pops up." All you do is click on the air/naval/land factory, look in the middle of the user interface (by default at the bottom of the screen), and then as mmmd said, click on the button at the very far right of your available choices. That will upgrade your tech for that building and that building only. You have to upgrade each building - doing it in one place doesn't make it apply to all other buildings (standard RTS procedure).

I think 6800s are only for AGP so there isn't much room for upgrades.User10293
The GeForce 6 series was built on PCI architecture, but later they came out with an AGP-based version to fill up the rest of the market (and their profit margins, I'm sure). I agree that he shouldn't shell out money like it was a new machine, but it'll serve its purposes.

Yeah, I think you're good to go with that machine. Maybe keep an eye on upgrading the video card in a year or two (like we're all going to have to do with the latest stuff that's coming down the line).
