Finding a PS3 that has backward compatibility is very rare nowadays since Sony doesn't produce them anymore ever eince 2008. So, you're better off keeping your PS2 right now to play all of your PS2 games.
They do this from time to time for games that really don't have that much value to them (Sony). So, expect some of that to be throughout its life cycle.
