A great port of the classic arcade/NES game; both for it's time and for the Gameboy

User Rating: 7 | Paperboy GB
For those who don't know the Paperboy games, basically they're all similar, just better graphics and more play options depending on the platform. Here on the Gameboy, we see the same formula being used again relatively nicely. And this version of Paperboy is good if you want to ever play it in your hands.

The story is that you're a young paperboy riding your bike as you dodge weird obstacles like tombstones, angry neighbors, dogs that chase you, random breakdancers in the street, cars that don't look where they're going, construction workers, lawnmowers with a mind of their own--the list goes on. On top of that, you're forced to send papers to your subscribers via throwing them at either their doorstep or mailbox/newspaper compartment.

The gameplay is always randomized with what houses are subscribers from the beginning, so replay value is decent and what you'd expect from the Paperboy series. Graphics are really good considering the original Gameboy's capabilities and the time this game was published. It's in black and white if you have a GB pocket, green and dark green if you have an original GB, and an attempt of getting colors from non-color programs if you have either and Advance or GB color. I was pleased and actually impressed with the graphics.

The only problem that I find with Paperboy is the difficulty. For those who've never played, this game definitely is no cakewalk if you actually want to go past level 2. But for the seasoned old-school gamer, Paperboy on the Gameboy should be a fun challenge.

The only other problem with Paperboy on the Gameboy is the lack of mode options. In fact, there's only one mode and one difficulty level. But that problem goes with any Paperboy game. But despite that fact, this game is great.

If you ever find the original Gameboy version of Paperboy; it's definitely worth trying out.
