Netflix is quickly becoming a ubiquitous part of the gaming system experience. The video streaming service is up and running on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and even the recently released 3DS handheld. As it turns out, gaming systems are pretty common for Netflix subscribers as well.

The Xbox 360 was the first console to have Netflix, but the least commonly used one among the video service's subscribers.
The Xbox 360 was the first console to have Netflix, but the least commonly used one among the video service's subscribers.

According to a Nielsen survey, half of Netflix subscribers access the service's library of streaming movies and TV shows through their game systems. The Wii was the most common gaming system to be hooked up to the service, with 25 percent of users reporting having used the system's Netflix app. That was easily ahead of the PS3 and Xbox 360, which were used by 13 percent and 12 percent of Netflix subscribers, respectively.

While those systems accounted for three of the top five most frequently cited platforms, they didn't quite top the list. Watching Netflix directly through a computer was the most commonly given answer, with 42 percent of subscribers using the service that way. Connecting a computer directly to a TV was the next most popular non-console hookup, with 14 percent of users having done that.

Even though rival streaming service Hulu is also available through consoles, it is far less commonly accessed through consoles. Only 3 percent of Hulu users reported viewing the site's video through the Wii or PS3, with just 2 percent watching through the Xbox 360.

The survey was conducted in March, with Nielsen conducting online interviews with more than 12,000 respondents.
