id holds back Rage
Postapocalyptic first-person shooter's release date pushed back to increasingly packed October 4, will now launch against Dark Souls, Twisted Metal, and The Darkness II.
Fans of id Software have been waiting seven years for Rage, the first original intellectual property for consoles from the developer since 1996's Quake. They'll need to wait a little bit longer, as id has pushed the game back from its previously announced September 13 release date, and it will now arrive in stores on October 4.
While the delay may give the developers more time to work on the game, it also puts the open-world first-person shooter up against some stiff competition. Among the games currently slated for release on the same day are Dark Souls, Twisted Metal, NBA 2K12, and The Darkness II.
Rage is set on a postapocalyptic Earth in the midst of recovering from an asteroid collision, where humans have emerged from underground "arks" much like the vaults in the Fallout games. Players assume the role of a survivor who has emerged from an ark and has been subsequently outfitted with an array of performance-enhancing nanotechnology and some powerful ranged weaponry. It is based on the id Tech 5 engine, the latest development toolset crafted by the company's chief technical officer, John Carmack.
