Ignition licenses Crysis 2 tech for mystery shooter
CryEngine 3 chosen for upcoming combat action-adventure game from publisher's London development studio.
Last fall, German developer Crytek announced that it had begun licensing CryEngine 3, the technology behind the highly anticipated Crysis 2, to external developers. To date, the response has been limited, with a pair of Asian online developers and Georgia-based Xavient being announced as licensing partners. Today the company announced its highest-profile partner to date, confirming that Ignition Entertainment will use CryEngine 3 for an upcoming project from its London development studio.
Set for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the CryEngine 3-powered Ignition title will be a combat action-adventure game. Details about the project, including a title and release window, were not revealed.
With CryEngine 3, Crytek is looking to carve out a share of the gaming engine market currently led by Epic Games and its Unreal Engine 3. Ignition itself is among the dozens of developers and publishers Epic counts as Unreal licensees. In 2008, the company adopted Unreal Engine 3 for an unannounced first-person shooter from its Florida development studio. That title had originally been slated as a late-2009 release, though that window came and went without an official announcement about the game. Currently, the publisher is listing open positions for a lead level designer and lead environment artist at the Florida studio.
