The Winter Olympics have played host to a number of heated rivalries over the years. USA versus USSR. Tonya Harding versus Nancy Kerrigan. Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards versus gravity.

You're going down, Shaun White.
You're going down, Shaun White.

Add one more classic matchup to the list, because Mario and Sonic are taking their feud to Vancouver. Sega today announced Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for release on the Wii and DS later this year. As with the last athletic competition between the mascots--Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games--Sega will be publishing the title in North America and Europe, while Nintendo will do the honors in Japan.

The events in question won't be the only changes made for the second installment in the series. New supporting cast members will be added to the mix, and the Wii edition will include support for the Wii Balance Board peripheral. The full list of events hasn't been revealed yet, but Sega has confirmed that staples like Alpine Skiing and Speed Skating will be included.

Regardless of the new characters, features, and events included, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games has a difficult mark to beat. Released on the Wii in December of 2007 and on the DS the following month, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
