Sony had high hopes for PlayStation 3 sales during the holiday rush in Australia, with the company forecasting back in October that it would sell 160,000 units down under by the end of the year. It seems the company has fallen short of its target, but not by much. Latest figures from data trackers GfK Australia show that more than 155,000 PS3s have now been sold in Australia, with 48,000 being snapped up in the last quarter of 2007 alone.

Sony's PS3 sales figures come off the back of the introduction of the lower-priced 40GB model in Australia in October 2007. The A$699.95 model replaced the A$999 60GB model.

The PSP also recorded solid growth, selling 45,000 units in the holiday period. And sales of the last-gen PS2 continues to be strong, with 81,000 units sold during the same period.

Nintendo and Microsoft are yet to officially release their latest console sales figures for Australia in 2007.
