User Rating: 9.2 | NBA Street V3 PS2
EA Sports Big's NBA Street V3 (V3) provides more than the conventional basketball video game. Unlike its predecessor NBA Street Vol. 2, V3 provides an experience that seems to leap out the television screen. Characters definitely look more life-like, there is more attention to detail of surroundings, and the in-game menus allow a player to select a number of options that weren't in the previous version. Take the court creator for instance, a player can now customise his home court with banners, and he can even change the appearance of his basketball rim net and stanchion, and court surface-- choices range from variations of a worn battered concrete to a smooth wood-tiled floor. As the game progresses in The Street League a player can unlock a variety of terrific looking Reebok sneakers not present in Street Vol. 2. There's more variety in the V3 store too. Clothes range from caps to beanies from baseball jerseys to t-shirts and of course basketball jerseys. There are also basketball shorts that are either short, long, NBA, or baggy. Sick and tired with the choices available to create a player in Vol. 2? You can now pre-select a player's basketball skills ranging from shooter (one with range), Dunker (one with aerial skills), an ankle-breaker (one with dribbling skills) or a big man (one with height, strength, rebounding and shot-blocking skills). You can even modify the pre-selected player's appearance i.e. facial hair, tattoo, muscle definition, skin color, etc. Player character texturing, movements and mannerisms also contribute to the overall life-likeness of the game. The NBA players really look like their real-life counterparts. Trick movements that made Vol. 2 a hit such as dribbling, dunking, shooting, stealing, and passing have already been made easier to do. Bored with traditional games that move from one objective to another and whose objectives have no connection whatsoever with each other? The V3 Street League which provides a player and his team, a journey to compete in several tournaments, spanning several courts in many different states for 70 days until the finals, provides players with rewards such as SP points, opportunities to recruit top NBA pros, opportunities to join leagues (especially the opportunity to be selected by an NBA team), invites by NBA players for head-to-head slam-dunk competitions and pick-up games are a few of the many things that occur as the Street League progresses. A player may even opt to retain his players or recruit a player from the losing opposing team to better his chances of winning the next tournaments. V3 is definitely more exciting that it's previous iteration. In fact upon completion, I've hit the showers.
