Best skateboarding on the GBC

User Rating: 8 | MTV Sports: Skateboarding Featuring Andy Macdonald GBC
MTV Sports Skateboarding is one of those titles that sounds so dumb and generic that most people ignored it. They figured it was the poor man's Tony Hawk and left it on the shelf. They were right. On the consoles it stunk. On the GBC however, it is the best handheld skateboarding experience on the platform.

Let's start with the good. This game has simple and easy to understand graphics. The little skater animates quite well and you can even pick out what kind of trick he is performing without reading the description. The backgrounds are plain, but work since it easy to see rails, ramps, and every other object that you can skate on while still seeing your skater. The sounds work and are no where near as irritating as most GBC games.

The game has a bunch of modes with free skate and World Tour being the standout modes. World Tour is the career mode that isn't very lengthy, but I feel just right for a handheld. Combine that with the free skate, and it kept me busy while I was on a business trip for work.

For the bad, the World Tour is not really about skating. It's about getting objects or things in the environment to help you score big. Not that bad, but it is kinda annoying that there is no trick mode or something in a game about tricks. Also, the control is very touchy and can take some time to get used to.

Your skater controls like a reject from Resident Evil, but once you get the hang of it, it works with the isometric point of view. It works so well that most games after this one copied it. Finally, all the skaters look the same but with a palette swap. Plus they are bald which is odd. The animate great, but look, well, odd.

Overall this game is great, with a few flaws. After the initial learning curve, I felt that even with the bad things, this game is the best on the system, even better than Tony Hawk 2 and 3. Though I do wonder where the *^$& the half pipe is, this game still helps me kill time when I'm bored. Awesome game.
