Mortal Kombat Trilogy is filled to the brim with technical problems, but it is still a very fun and robust 2-D fighter.

User Rating: 8.6 | Mortal Kombat Trilogy N64
In so many ways Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the N64 is a complete failure. Ultimate Mortal Komat 3 became available for the SNES in 1996 (the same year this game was released) and the Super Nintendo game has none of the glitches and weaknesses of this version. Even with all of that said, I still prefer this game over the SNES one, simply because the additional characters and modes make this the version that I always return to. Before I go any farther, I want to point out that the computer AI is as unfair as it could possibly be, meaning you should completely ignore this game if you are only looking to play it in the one-player mode.

. Mortal Kombat 3 looks amazing on the Super Nintendo, the characters are large and animate quicker and smoother than any other characters for that system. However, this game looks pretty bad on the N64. The characters are a tiny bit bigger than the SNES games and the backgrounds are more detailed (though they still look bad), but considering that this is the same system that Super Mario 64 is on, that is a pretty pitiful compliment. It is also important to note that this game has severe slowdown at times. However, if you turn of the aggressor mode (a stupid addition you will want to turn off anyway), the slowdown shouldn't be much of a problem. Though the graphics are bad, they are still classic Mortal Kombat, and the continued presence of cool looking ninjas and robots gives the game a lot of character.

. The sound is similar quality to the graphics. Really disappointing, but still classic. For most of the characters, the same sound effects are used for running and getting hit and it can get pretty annoying. Shao Khan returns as the announcer of the winning fighter for each match (he's not in UMK3 for the Snes) and his awesomeness cannot be overstated. As well as being repetitive, the sound is not very high quality.

. Now, I have spent a lot of time listing this games many problems, so why is my score still so high? The Mortal Kombat franchise has some of the most exciting, fast, balanced and refined gameplay of any 2-D fighting franchise: it takes more than some technical problems and no significant gameplay enhancements to change that. This game gives you more characters to play with than UMK3 did and Baraka, Rayden, and Johhny Cage really do help the game out. Despite the fact that UMK3 has been released for the 360 with online play, when you want some classic fighting action with a physical friend, this is a great choice.
