It does nothing to build upon the previous game

When MK X came out, It was a much-needed reimagining of the series that had long needed a reboot of sorts. MK 11, the long-awaited sequel, was looking to build upon the strong foundation that MK X built for the future of this series. Sadly, It breaks away from that foundation and delivers a game that fails to live up to its predecessor.

MK 11 features an incredibly short and bland campaign with a storyline that ranks among the worst in the MK franchise. The new villain and new characters featured in MK 11 ultimately fail to leave an impression and instead make you wish that they were never added in the first place. And the same goes for the Kombat Pack characters - Nightwolf, Joker, Shang Tsung. Nightwolf and Shang Tsung were already prominent MK characters who should have been main roster additions, not DLC. Joker was already heavily featured in the Injustice series and while I know they love doing the DC/MK crossovers, Again it feels like he's a character that was already too heavily featured and if they wanted to do a DC character, Why not do one that isn't as well known or used? As a fan of both series, It feels insulting for them to just recycle characters as heavily as they do. I want something new, Not something I've seen half a dozen times already.

With my small rant over, Let's move elsewhere. The gameplay is virtually the same as MK X. The only difference being that X-Ray moves are now replaced with a move called Fatal Blow. With X-Ray moves, You just built it up and used this special move to deal a large amount of damage to your opponent. With Fatal Blow, Your health has to be 30% or lower and you can only use it once per match. This is a welcomed change and the only real positive thing about MK 11. Both moves are equally as powerful but Fatal Blow can no longer be spammed like X-Ray moves were.

The customization in this game, which was really hyped up during the promotion of it, is severely lacking. In order to game access to different intros and outros, You have to grind play as a single character. Character skins are a rarity and often require a store purchase to get. And cosmetic items are also equally hard to come by and something you'll probably not even notice when playing the game, much unlike Injustice 2. And I bring up Injustice 2 as it seems they tried to mimic the customization features in that game for MK 11 only it didn't work out at all. Customization heavily relies on in-game purchases, grind playing and a whole lot of luck in order to get items for a character you actually want items for. It's totally random and that makes it even more frustrating.

I am also not a fan of the "Always Online" feature. In case you didn't know, You have to be always online in order to gain any kind of rewards from Towers and things of that nature. If you aren't then you really can only play local co-op and the campaign as playing the towers offline means no rewards or experience. I don't know why that is a feature and I really hate games that do that. In this day and age, It's idiotic to have that and if the game has server issues or you are having connection issues, That means you can't even play a bulk of the game. I hope that isn't something that they carry over for MK 12.

Overall: 4/10
MK 11 takes multiple steps back from what MK X was. The customization options mainly rely on in-game purchases, The always online feature is just dumb and the campaign is one of the worst in years. MK 11 fails to add anything worthwhile and, at least to myself, ends up being one of the worst additions to the franchise.
