Initial D meets visual novel/eroge?

User Rating: 7.5 | Moero Downhill Night (CD) PC
Moero Downhill Night(which I'll refer to as MDN)is a visual novel/eroge which uses decision making segments during it's racing segments(which can result in you winning or losing races)to be unique, plus it allows you to make lots of decisions when you're not racing, which allows to the story to arc in different ways and will affect which girl ends up being your girlfriend at the end of the game and which girls you'll have sex with.

The story is about a guy named 'Shou' who gets hit by a car and when he wakes up,a beautiful pink-haired girl named 'Michi' is next to him and is concerned about him and for some reason she believes he is a legendary racing navigator and she asks him to nagivate for her because she wants to learn how to drive fast. The story tries to get you emotionally involved as Michi says she needs money because she and her father are struggling financially and Michi works as a taxi driver and she will even use her taxi for some of the races.

Shou ends up being her navigator and basically you'll need to help Michi beat all the other drivers in races. The story brings other characters into it,including 4 other girls who Shou can be romantically involved with or have sex with and there's other characters such as old friends of Shou and rival drivers and Shou's grumpy boss at work and Michi's father who brings some funny moments into the story. The 4 other girls are unique in personality/occupation.For example, one of them is a bad-tempered but cute black-haired girl named Kyouka who isn't afraid to tell off Shou for staring at her breasts and one of the girls is a nun named 'Maria' who takes her religion very seriously and one of the girls looks and acts very young(which is kinda disturbing)her name is Yuna and one of the girls is a mysterious but pretty foreigner named Lily who has violet hair.

Michi has a very cheerful and bubbly personality.

Basically,in the story,Shou will need to learn how cars work(because he doesn't know much about cars despite being Michi's navigator)and he is thinking whether he should tell Michi he isn't the legendary navigator she thinks he is because he really likes her and he is afraid if she finds out he isn't that legendary navigator, she won't want to spend time with him anymore, but he knows deceiving her is wrong, but since he's become her navigator, she's been winning races which makes her happy. There is story moments that are funny enough to make me giggle, even if some of them involve sexual humor because they're quite goofy. This is type of eroge which doesn't provide much build-up for the romance stories/sex scenes, with Michi being the exception. But the characters are entertaining nonetheless.

The game also gives you the option of cheating on the girl you're romantically involved with and you can even have sex with the girl you're cheating with,as well as have sex with the girl you're romantically involved with, but still get a happy ending.

As for the racing segments, they're represented by CGI that's done by people who worked on some of the Initial D games and it can make the racing story elements quite exciting when you see a car trying to overtake another in real-time.Being the navigator for Michi, you'll tell her what to do(whether it's go fast,or which gear to use or when to break, which direction to steer the car/swerve,when to countersteer etc.).Even if you don't know much about cars(like me)many of the choices are obvious or the drivers will give you hints and you can find helpful guides for the racing sections on the internet too. However,if you lose a race,it's game over. The early races start off easy enough and allow you to make mistakes, but the later races are more challenging and the correct choices to take are not obvious. Also,to make it feel a bit more like a real race, you have a time limit for how long you can make decisions when you're navigating during a race.

The game has some nice artwork,I love seeing the sunset over the mountain and I like the way the trees look. The CGI scenes make certain story segments(which are not just racing segments feel more life-like)because you'll see some nice CGI of cars driving fast and the way you see them driving quickly over the road is something nice to add to a visual novel.I love the character designs for Michi and Kyouka a lot.Michi especially because she looks very cute/pretty and her cute voice and bubbly personality make her even more cute.

The cars look great and there's good diversity in the cars such as the average,cheaper-looking Japanese cars as well as heavily modified cars which look very fast and designed for racing.

The game is short though, you can see all the endings in 2 hours if you utilize the game saves, but it was fun while it lasted and I bought the game for cheap anyways,so it doesn't matter.

Overall,I enjoyed this visual novel, even though I don't know much about cars and like I said,it's story made me laugh a few times and it has some lovely/colorful artwork and great CGI but it could have used a bit more character depth and you can see everything this game has to offer in 2 hours.
