The first boxing video game ever is a huge smash! "Join the Nintendo Fun Club today, Mac." - Doc Louis

User Rating: 9.7 | Punch-Out!! NES
Punch-Out featuring Mr. Dream is a miraculous sports game that holds up very well to this day. You are Little Mac, a boxer. Doc Louis is your coach. He sometimes gives you advice on how to beat certain opponenets. There are a lot of great quotes in the game. In the game there are up to 3 rounds if neither played has been KO'ed or TKO'ed. Afterwards, the referee the winner will be determined by the referee. (The referee looks just like Mario.) There are 3 circuits- the Minor, the Major, and the World. After you complete a circuit, you will be given a password which will be displayed at the main title. You can go there to work on the circuit you are currently on. The game is very simplistic, overall. However, Nintendo managed to used their smarts to make it a truly amazing game. With each foe comes strategy and intense timing. Often times, a little action will indicate that your foe is about to attack. You can dodge left and right. You can block some attacks, too. As to puching, you can punch the stomach and jab in the face. Sometimes you'll get a power punch. You flinch for a second and then throw a really hard punch. However, on a Wiimote this can be frustrating because you have to reach all the way with your right hand to press it. Believe me, those couple seconds can cost you. Moving on to graphics, they are among one of the best NES games I've ever seen. Every character has a cartoon look and they all look good and move pretty smoothly and not all jerky...ish. The floor on the boxing ring is green. There's even an audience in the background that do little actions. The music is Punch-Out is really neat to listen to. It has cool little tunes and a few sound effects to each character. You'll hear a rather unusual sound, which is the audience cheering, whenever someone is knocked out. The Minor and Major Circuit is overall pretty easy and can be done in a couple of hours your first time through. When you get to the World Circuit, things really get hard. The farthest I have gotten so far was to Mr. Sandman. After him, there's still 2 more people to fight , the 2nd one being Mr. Dream... Mike Tyson's replacement. This game is only $5 on Virtual Console, and it is well worth getting. Unless you're terrible when it comes to precise, split-second timing, this game should be owned by all. I will warn that this game should not be played on an HDTV. There are several lag problems that will make it all very frustrating.
