Midtown Madness 3 is one helluva fun game. It's real strength ultimately is Xbox Live because the single player "Work Undercover" mode is just too plain to pay any real attention to. It also gets annoying since, like Midnight Club 2, it'll take a couple of tries to get the correct route through the city down, and having to sit through the strangely-accented commentary before each round gets grating real fast. Bottom line for me is, the only reason to go through the single player mode is to unlock the cars for the cruise, blitz, and checkpoint modes for offline play. The audio glitch with custom soundtracks does get annoying when the same song you're listening to when you're playing online repeats endlessly. Hopefully Microsoft will come up with a fix for this in the future. (Man, this really could be the start of patches for consoles). It's funny that this aspect of the Live experience would have a glitch: The music included in the game kind of sucks, and it's inevitable that you're going to want to play your own music. The control is also a little pudgy. I prefer the maneuverability of Midnight Club 2's cars, but that doesn't mean MM3 doesn't control decently. The cars will do as they're told, but they're occasionally difficult to control. On Live, it's fantastic. Nothing but fun. Depends, of course, on who you're playing with: A couple of jerks will ruin the experience through and through. But if you do manage to play with some decent people then it's great. So far, everyone online seems to be getting along. Maybe it's something in the water. MM3 also appears to emulate the new Xbox "Live Aware" schtick that Microsoft has been touting. Gamers can log in to XBL from the main menu, and still be able to play the single player modes offline. Nice touch. Midtown Madness 3 is a great game with great online modes. The offline may not be the best, but the excitement and fun that you can get off of Xbox Live is more than enough to make up for this shortcoming. THE VERDICT: Midtown Madness 3 vs. Midnight Club 2 The short n' sweet of it: Midtown Madness has a better online experience than Midnight Club 2. Midnight Club 2's offline story mode is more fun than MM3's. MC2 does a good job with its online play, but it's not as great as MM3's.
