So this is where my favorite Super Smash bros. character came from...

User Rating: 8.5 | Metroid NES
Thus continuing my journey into the world of old classics, I played the original metroid because I had heard good things, and hardly ever go back as far as NES. My first reaction was what exactly is going on? My second was hey this is actually pretty good? My third was holy s hit is this hard. The gameplay takes some getting used to because samus can only shoot in two directions which is a little awkward at first, plus a completely stock samus is a very weak in that you take a lot of damage, and it takes forever to kill enemies. It also doesn't help that every time you die you barely get any health back, and it also takes forever to accumulate health 5 pts at a time. So the forever it takes to kill enemies with the basic gun multiplied by the forever it takes to accumulate health equals forever squared aka way too ucking long. So this brings me to my next point, if you ever play this game, do so on an emulator bc save states are a godsend. I know this technically is cheating and doesn't say much for me as a gamer, but with a game like this to not do so would take years off my life.
Aaaanyway, once you get the hang of the shooting and get a basic idea of what's going on with the map, your ready to do some hunting. First I explored looking for missile tanks, upgrades, and energy tanks. I really was amazed by the awesomeness of the music throughout. (Classic Brinstar and Kraid's Lair were my favorite). Once you deck out the samus suit, it's time to hunt the bosses. Kraid's lair was really confusing, I managed to spend 10 minutes using the auto fire button to drop bombs trying to make it up one of those S curves, then fought a decoy Kraid halfway across the map, and was about as confused as a mentally challenged person trying to put on a glove. Eventually with help from gamefaqs found the real Kraid and defeated him with some difficulty, good boss fight by the way. Then I went to Ridley's lair, which proved in my opinion to be easier and more straightforward. Ridley was a joke. Maybe my game glitched but I was able to stand about 3 feet from him where he couldn't hit me and just held down the wave beam button until he died. Finally, Mother Brain. I have to say why make a wave beam if it's impossible to use it against the metroids. I learned this the hard way and had to backtrack. Eventually I beat mother brain (without using the save state) and finished the game. (helmet removed ending). Overall I was pretty impressed with the game. It was short but sweet. The in game upgrades gave you a steady increase in power and defense, and this coupled with your natural progression at getting better with the game made it an enjoying yet challenging game throughout. Although, the beginning before my first energy tank was hard and confusing as hell. Awesome music, good bosses and enemies, and an intense escape scene are some of the crowns that make this game worth checking out.
