A great collection of the Mega Man X series.

User Rating: 8 | Mega Man X Collection PS2
I believe there were two kinds of Mega Man fans back in the day. The classic Mega Man fans, and the X fans. Of course, being an X fan, I skipped Anniversary Collection and picked this title up. Mega Man X Collection for the Play Station 2 certainly delivers, but it's glamour only lasts for so long...

The collection itself contains all of the Mega Man X games that have been released for the consoles, not including X7, X8, or the GBA "Xtreme" spin-offs. For fans of the originals, all game play aspects remain untouched, and certainly will bring back fond memories. All the jumping, and shooting with your X-buster will really keep you playing. The games themselves still deliver the tough difficulties of bosses, and levels, and this may serve as a downside. Some gamers may get frustrated at times of the rate they will die in the game. For each of the six Mega Man games first playable, you will certainly see your share of in-game death, unless you're a hard core gamer.

Unlockables in the game include secret games that can be played, and different BGM tracks that can be unlocked when beating a certain title. I found MMX1-4 to be the best. I had never played the fifth and sixth versions, but when I did, I was disappointed. They sort of differentiate the game play on you, requiring you to complete objectives within levels, and contain so much dialogue, it slows game play down. Some may disagree however, but that is just my opinion.

The graphics are also untouched. The first three titles maintain all their SNES glory, as does the 4-6 games maintain their PSone glory. The 2-D animations are very colorful and vibrant, with each character sporting an anime style look. Although a little dated, the graphics do stick to their roots, and that's a plus.

Familiar song tracks and sound effects will make Mega Man fans feel right at home, and some additional unlockable BGM tracks make for a good time also.

At the end of the day, I really wished that there were more unlockables. I've seen my share of these game collection series, and I'm real happy that Mega Man X got his own. Now that these games have been brought together in this nice one-disc collection, fans of the series won't have to dust off cartridges or find the discs to play them.
