Master of Magic, Master of Strategies

User Rating: 10 | Master of Magic PC
First and foremost, next to playing Star Wars: Tie Fighter for the first time, this title was one of the greatest gaming experiences I have ever had. It is hard to pick just one element of Master of Magic (MoM) that makes it the masterpiece it truly is: the randomized maps, artifact creation, customized units, unique heroes, the list goes on and on. To my dismay, I no longer have a computer that can play the game so I am working off a bit of memory for this review.

Graphics: Compared to modern games this title definitely looks dated, however, that being said, this title uses the technology available at the time to really give life and feeling to the animations. I enjoyed seeing how the pikemen I had cast immolation continued to be surrounded with a fiery aura for the rest of the game. Additionally, all improvements are conspicuously positioned in your cities. For example if you cast the sacrifice spell, your city would not only gain mana, but you could see in the city itself the dark priests chanting and praying.

Sound: From what I remember the sound was very simple MIDI based fare, common for the time.

Gameplay: This game is incredibly variable. Players could pick from preset wizards (leaders) or create their own with their own spells and specializations. Maps were random and different every time. Possibly my favorite element of MoM was creating powerful artifacts of my own design. I remember crafting the sword Stormbringer from the Elric series, a +10 Vampiric sword. I think it took me almost a hundred turns, but once I had it, I ruled the battlefied. Another thing I really liked about MoM was was that each hero unit that appeared at your door looked truly unique with his or her own special unique abilities and equipment. Warrax the Chaos Warrior FTW!

Replay Value: The replay value for MoM is extremely high due to its endless variability and options for customization: each map is different, you can pick the number of opponents, alter the difficulty setting, create custom wizards, etc.

MoM is a fantastic game that should not be missed by any fan of turn-based strategy games. Although it's an older title, it truly stands the test of time! If you have ever enjoyed games like Civilization, Age of Wonders, Galactic Civilizations, Black and White, or Lords of Magic, then I highly encourage to find this title. You will not be disappointed!
