As a hardcore Magic: The Gathering fan, this game rocks for me.

I'm not really into the Marvel comic universe nor its trading card game but as a Magic fan, I thought I might give it a try to see how this TCG works. At first, given that I'm already familiar with card game mechanics, I still find it hard to grasp the concept of this particular TCG after an hour, so I think even Marvel fans who were TCG novices may totally give it up if impatience kicks in.

Nonetheless, after a while, things become a little clear, as I can see the link between resources (mana for Magic fans), locations (non-basic lands), plot twists (instants) and of course, your Marvel heroes (Legendary creatures). Also at first, it's hard to see the winning pattern and tactic, but it gets more exciting to discover the formula via unlocking better cards by opening your booster packs.

On the other hand, since I manage to be drawn towards it with ease, it opens up in me a newfound knowledge and interest in the Marvel universe. Along with the more popular X-Men, Fantastic Four and Spider-man characters, I also get to know and like the less known such as the Avengers, Marvel Knights and Thunderbolts. The cool thing is that, if you've at least watched those popular Marvel movies, you'll find that the card abilities of these superheroes somehow match their own in an uncanny way, and that actually works very well in a card game system in terms of triggering combos or thwarting the opponents' tactics. For example, Spider-man's web counters have stopping effects and Rogue really has ability copy-cat skills, and the cool thing is there are different versions of the same superhero with different casting costs. It's really fun to see what each character can do in a card form. The only downside is that it gets a little repetitive after a chapter or two.

Ultimately, this game may not turn a Marvel comic fan into a TCG enthusiast, but a TCG fan may find it worthwhile a try without much learning curve hassle if you also have a little interest in superheroes.
