Review 50

Did you hear that??? Review number 50? Am I officially a freaking nerd yet?

Released: August 26, 2001
Developer: Nintendo
Game Genre: Driving/Kart Racing

Gameplay
Gotta love good ole Mario Kart. For those who don’t know, you pick a character, then race against 7 other racers and attempt to beat them. The things that make Mario Kart unique from other racing games are the twisting turns, the cartoonish graphics, the coins and the boxes that contain items that can be used against the other drivers.

Mario Kart features a Mario GP Mode (the main game mode, in which you compete through series of races in three different difficulties), a Time Trial Mode and a Quick Race Mode.

Players available in Mario Kart are Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, DK, Wario, and Bowser. Each character has different stats that balance them out…well, they’re supposed to. The lighter characters are much easier to use and much faster, while the heavier characters are very slow, and even though they have pretty good handling, they’re very slow.

Graphics
About as good as you can get on the GBA. Not too flashy, and there’s some pixilation, but up close the graphics are very sharp and very well-designed.

Durability
It’s not durable enough that I will keep it with me at all times, but there is definitely a replayability factor, and with unlockable tracks, it’s a game that will last a while.

Sound:
Pretty catchy.

Controls:
Mario Kart Super Circuit gets about as in-depth with the controls as it possibly can without making it too complicated. A is accelerate, B is brake, L uses an item, R jumps, and Start pauses. Seems simple, but in order to win some of the tougher races, you have to be at the top of your game and be able to hold the acceleration while turning (releasing the acceleration for a split second helps with handling as well) and also use an item with the L button and be prepared to jump over holes or bumps with the R button. Sounds complicated, but it’s easy to get the hang of, and it keeps you busy.

Difficulty
The early tracks are easy while the later tracks are hard…the same as with most games.
