Mario's first solo game is still a good one, even if it's not in the same league as the games that were to come.

Mario's first game that didn't involve a very large ape was 'Mario Bros'. This was orginally an arcade game that garnered quite a following back when it was released in the early 80's. And of course, it cemented Mario as a true video game personality and the character would, obviously, later go on to be a legend. But how does the original stand up to father time?

First off, this isn't the arcade version. This is the NES version, obviously. Now you might be saying to yourself, "Well no sh!t man. This is a review for an NES game!". But I thought it would be important to mention this anyways, because if one of you out there remembers playing this in the arcade and finds this cartridge availiable for purchase (or just downloads it on their Wii), you will not be getting the better version.

This NES version has worse graphics and even a bit of slowdown. The controls are VERY loose and it feels like you are running around on ice. But the gameplay can still be addicting and the game definately provides a nice challenge. The game really gets good when you team up with a buddy, who can play as Luigi. Things can get pretty hectic when you start trying to bump each other instead of the enemies. And it can be quite hilarious to know that you caused your buddy's death by what you did to him. As such, this is a game better played with two players.

Sure, Mario Bros. isn't a revolutionary game like some of the others to come in the series. But you can definately see some early signs of things to come if you play the game long enough. I found the game fun for awhile and it a must-add to any gamer's collection, especially if you are a fan of the Mario games.
