I've been playing since 2008, back then it really wasn't worth playing, but now Nexon is getting better at providing. It's easy and boring when you first begin, but otherwise it's a pretty good game. The social-ness provided in the game, as well as your ability to do what you will with your character(s) without HAVING to follow a story-line is quite fun. Overall, this game is decent and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a game to waste their time on. ( It's very time consuming ).. Also, the servers and players are overall friendly, and modding/hacking isn't a real problem. During new patches, modders come out with some new content, but otherwise, it's close to the least-modded game you can get.
Services such as pets must be bought with NX, but some free animal pets are provided. You can get a total of 3 free character cards, with starting from a human. So, you honestly DON'T have to waste your money on Karma Koins/NX.
