An absolute bargain at £1.99

I bought this the day it came out and I've got to say I really quite like it. It certainly captures the spirit of the original even if the gameplay is different, and much like fl0w it's a great little time-filler, which I suspect is the niche it's supposed to fill. The thing is, this is a £1.99 title and I've read reviews treating it like a full price game - and it just doesn't work like that. The depth of gameplay and length is pared down from what you'd expext from a traditional full-price title, but this is as much a piece of visual entertainment as it is a 'game' - which is probably why it's marketed as an interactive screensaver. And it still retains the visual charm that the original had while providing good enough gaming and challenge to make you want to replay and open up the additional areas. The mechanics are different - you get the LocoRocos to follow your butterfly, and you also manipulate individual elements of the environment with the sixaxis tilt/shake rather than the whole ground - but well suited to the title and enjoyable to use I've found. There's a certain amount of old-skool platform trial and error involved as you figure out what to do with individual elements, but it's engaging and like the original provides a low-pressure but fun gaming experience.

Part of the problem with LocoRoco Cocoreccho might be that despite being told otherwise by Sony, fans of the original probably expected a full sequel to the original - and this isn't it. It's a small, casual game being sold at a microtransaction price that works more by capturing the visual flair and charm of the original rather than directy apeing the gameplay. I have no doubt that there will eventually be a full sequel eventually (although I sincerely hope it's not just 'more of the PSP version' - It would be a shame to do a direct clone when a key point of the 1st was it's originality) But for the price this is being sold at, you can't go wrong with it, really, and I'm reflecting that in the score. Certainly better value in terms of cost per hours of enjoyment than practically any full-price title I could name.
