Epic, dark and exciting
GAMEPLAY 10/10
There are two plains of existence, the Material World and the Spirt Realm. If you die in the Material World then you are sent to the Spirit Realm, to devour souls, regain your health and transfer back into the Material. There are other reasons to transfer to the Spirit Realm though, the surrounding change, walls can move allowing you passage through an obstacle which you couldn't pass in the Material World. You cannot always stay in the Spirit Realm as you cannot move objects or open doors. This is one small part in a world of puzzles, some very frustrating. So the purpose? You travel to different parts of Nosgoth(the games location) to kill your brethren. They all have evolved over the time you were in the abyss, each have certain abilities like withstanding water. After defeating one you will gain their ability which can then aid you in finding the next one. All of them have certain vampiric followers, which is a bonus as you will not always be fighting the same style of creature. You can glide using your broken wings, pass through doors in the Spirt Realm and many powers you gain in the game from your Brethren which I will not spoil anymore. You will eventually be able to use the Soul Reaver weapon, which I will not spoil for you.
GRAPHICS 9/10
For the time this was released they were very good, I remember when I first starting playing I was amazed. Obviously they aren't very good in this day but they do not spoil the game. The world is massive and you, your enemies, surroundings and everything else are very detailed. Buildings are very gothic, the world has went through a massive depressing change and you can notice it in the world around you. The change between Material and Spirit worlds are very nice.
SOUND 10/10
The voice acting is superb. It makes the game feel like a film! Thats credited to the amazing voice talents that were involved in the game. The music is dark and industrial, perfect for the storyline and the world around you. Creatures sound terrific and you really couldn't ask for anymore.
VALUE 10/10
Worth picking up, before you play the sequel released for the PS2. It will keep you entertained for hours and you may even have another run through the game! ------
I give Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver a 9.6. One of the greatest games ever created in my opinion. Everything is amazing and I would even welcome a remake for one of the newer consoles. It's an epic, dark and exciting.
