Quite a poor JRPG.

User Rating: 4.5 | Last Rebellion PS3

I'm a big JRPG fan and people have criticised me because they think I will say any JRPG is a good game. However,I think Last Rebellion is a poor JRPG and the worst one I've played yet.The battle system relies heavily on trial by error, the graphics are ugly or lack detail(for the most part)and the story has some decent ideas but lacks depth and there's only 2 characters in your party plus a bunch of dull NPCs.

-------------
Story
-------------
The story is about how a Goddess of death(named Meitilia)likes to bring death and destruction to the world,so she gives certain humans special abilities such as making them powerful warriors(named blades)hoping they will kill people and she gives certain other people the ability to be sealers(who can destroy souls).A god representing life(Formival)has the ability to revive dead people and this will play an important part in the story later.

There's 2 main playable characters, one of them is named 'Nine',and he's a red -haired guy who I guess you could say is supposed to be a prince and he was betrayed by people who you'd think he could trust and after a series of events his soul becomes joined with an attractive, blonde haired woman named 'Aisha' who's a sealer and she has problems controlling her powers which causes people to fear her. What I mean by their souls being joined is if one of them dies, they'll both die.The reason Aisha made her soul join with Nine is a bit silly IMO.

However, this is all explained at/near the start of the game, and it's not until near the end of the game that the story will start getting interesting again (the story doesn't have enough depth and isn't paced well).Near the end of the game, some surprising twists will be revealed but for the most part, the story is quite dull, despite it's interesting beginning.Near the beginning of the game, the story can add a touch of emotion/and a good sense of betrayal which motivated me a little bit to aid Nine's quest for revenge but between the interesting story moments near the start of the game and the plot twists/revelations at the end, there's nothing much interesting happening in between.

--------------
Gameplay
-------------
The battle system is turn based and relies heavily on trial by error. To do a lot of damage to enemies, you'll first need to melee attack each enemy's body parts in the correct order. Some enemies might have 6 body parts, some enemies have 11 body parts etc.

Some enemies are vulnerable to magic attacks, while other enemies are more vulnerable to melee attacks.Even if an enemy is vulnerable to magic, you'll first need to attack it's body parts in the correct order if you want your spell to be very effective.

In the first few hours of the game, the enemies can inflict a lot of damage to your characterss and performing the chain combos on enemies in the correct order is critical,or you will face the game over screen many times.

The game's battle system doesn't have much of a fun feeling to it.I love turn based battles but the one in Last Rebellion isn't fun to use, because of the trial by error, and because you'll need to input so many commands when you want to attack each enemy's body parts and until you figure out the correct order in how to attack an enemy's body parts, you'll need to keep inputting these many commands and using trial by error(once you figure out the correct order to attack an enemy's body parts, you can select the memory command so you don't have to reinput the commands over and over).

Also, when you hit a certain body part of an enemy in the correct order,a 'bingo' sign will be displayed on the screen and the number for the turn to hit that body part will be displayed everytime you face that type of enemy so you won't have to memorize the order for hitting the numerous body parts on each enemy.

Another annoying thing about the gameplay,is because of the fact Nine and Aisha share one body,it means that if one of them dies, they'll both die,if a status effect effects one character,it will effect them both.Nine is supposed to have a spell that can cure the status effect named 'paralysis' but if he's paralysed because Aisha was inflicted with paralysis, how can he use the paralysis ability? Also, some enemies can be very cheap and will keep casting paralysis over and over and because if either Nine or Aisha are hit by paralysis,it means they'll both be paralysed for a few turns and the enemies can defeat you by just casting paralysis over and over and keeping both party members paralysed and wearing down their health, and it's frustrating when they do this too.

The game doesn't even allow you to buy items! You can find items in chests.

There's hardly any NPCs to interact with, just ugly looking creatures who all look the same and a couple of NPCs who are cheesy(such as a guy who dresses like a pirate,a little girl with a tail)etc.

Some of the environments are set out like mazes but they also require annoying trial by error, such as trying out different teleporation devices and trying out many different paths.

At times(especially later in the game)I did feel a slight bit of satisfaction towards the gameplay when I could unleash long and powerful combos that defeated bosses quickly, but it's not enough to make the game fun.

Graphics
----------
For the most part, the graphics during gameplay look ugly/dated.Many of the floors and walls often lack detail or look ugly and look as if the developers copied them from somewhere else and added them to make some of the game's environments without much effort or attempt at creativity or detail.Other objects such as mountains in the backgrounds or the clothing of the characters have rough edges and even the trees and grass and few houses you'll come across look ugly. The environments sometimes have a nice hazy/dreary effect but the environmental objects still look ugly/dull.

The game also uses illustrated scenes to show story segments and they have a nice hand drawn artstyle and don't have much animation but I think it helps make the illustrations look more serious and they have quite a bit of gore and I like how they aren't too colorful and you'll see things such as a yellowish colored sky to help add to the hazy atmosphere and Asian style buildings and it blends nicely together.

The loading screens have some nice illustrations, including some nice perverted drawings.

--------
Sound
--------
The voice acting for this game is atrocious.Nine's voice is annoying.Aisha's voice sounds okay but her dialogue is boring. The other NPCs sound like random people picked off the street to read dialogue, and I remember one NPC who's voice is terrible and it sounds like he has a nose peg clipped to hise nose when he talks.

Some of the music in the game is quite enjoyable/beautiful suprisingly.Such as the electronic/Japanesey music for one of the boss fights, and the beautiful song that's sung by a Japanese woman at the ending credits and the music for some of the other locations.

Overall
-------
This game is one of the worst RPGs I've played and I can't recommend it,unless you want to pick up an easy platinum trophy. If you're a big Nippon fan, maybe you'll appreciate this game has 4 prinny secret bosses to fight.
