A short, easy, and infectiously enjoyable platformer

It seems to me that, generally speaking, 2-D platforming is not my genre of choice when talking about video games. I do enjoy Super Mario and Castlevania from time to time, but I often find games in the genre to just be downright frustrating and even boring. That's why I love a game like Kirby's Dream Land for the original Game Boy so much - it's easy without feeling ridiculous, the controls are smooth and responsive, and the game is simply well-designed and fun as hell. This is just an enjoyable game from start to finish, and although you'll reach the ending quickly and easily, that doesn't make the experience any less worthwhile.

Kirby's Dream Land was released in 1992, and unlike most platformers from that era, the game is not insanely challenging - as a matter of fact, it often veers on the side of 'easy', and up until the final boss battle, the game feels pretty relaxing and simple. For someone as atrocious as I am at platforming games, this is a good thing; it means that I can enjoy the game from beginning to end without smashing my Game Boy against a wall in frustration. On top of the comfortable difficulty, the graphics are captivating and the soundtrack is utterly... umm... 'adorable'.

I really like the style of platforming introduced on Kirby's Dream Land, and I had a complete blast playing this game again for the first time in probably close to 10 years. The only substantial complaint I have with this game is how short it is - I beat this game in roughly an hour, and I'd imagine any experience platforming connoisseur could do it even shorter on their first playthrough. This is a very, very short game, but thankfully it's fun enough to warrant numerous playthroughs. If you, like me, enjoy platformers that provide a degree of challenge without feeling frustrating, Kirby's Dream Land warrants a high recommendation.
