Well, as you might expect, as the game that began one of Nintendo's finest series Kirby's Dream land is quite an excellent experience. While a few of the elements that made the series so popular in future installments have not made it into this game, it still manages to play and feel like a great Kirby game. Kirby's Dream Land is more or less a straight-ahead platforming game, although it is made interesting by a few of it's main charachter's quirks. First of all, Kirby has the ability to inhale his enemies and spit them out again to attack other foes. In this game Kirby can not absorb his enemies' abilites. That power was not given to Kirby until Kirby's Adventure came out on the NES. However, this game is designed so that the player can use the ability to swallow and spit out foes to it's fullest extent. Also, Kirby has the ability to fly. Oddly enough, he will only need to do so a few times during the course of the game. Also, when he chooses to stop flying, he will spit out an air gust which can be used to attack most minor foes. Now, for the technical aspects of the game. The graphics on this game are done very well for a game on the original Game Boy. Charachters animate well, and the scenery never blurs together. Still, it does kind of suffer from being an original Game Boy game, as it only comes in four colors, and the art is pretty basic, although it does have a nice style to it. Sound is also fairly good for an original Game Boy game. Most of the music will get stuck in your head for weeks (years even) if you play this game enough, and the sound effects fit a Kirby game quite well. Kirby's movements and actions are played quite well by the Game Boy's sound system, and nothing ever sounds blurred or distorted. Finally, for replay value, this game includes an added "Hard Mode" where enemies move and attack in more dangerous ways, and some have even been replaced by other, more dangerous foes. Kirby's Dream Land is quite an excellent experience. It contains most of the elements that would become farmiliar to the rest of the series, and introduces the world to the tiny blob that would become one of Nintendo's greatest charachters. A must buy if you can still find it.
