User Rating: 8.3 | Killzone PS2
Although I was let down from what I originally thought it was going to be, Killzone is not a total loss. With addicting online that rivals SOCOM, a great story, and a gritty astmosphere, you may find it a great game. However, it has some major problems which makes it a rental, as everyone will be unsure if they like it or not. The gameplay may be intense, and the action is brought to you on a regualr basis, but sometimes it feels repeatitive, until you get farther into the game. The AI is generally smart, but full of bugs. They will many times become confused, and be very hesistant to attack. There are frame rate problems, but on a TV opposed to a computer screen, 30 FPS is still great. There are plenty of bugs, but the online seems to be put together well. If there weren't so many offline bugs, and if the AI didn't get confused at times, I would have given this game a much higher review. The graphics is a akward situtation. The animations are beautifully mastered, and the textures are generally appealing. However, the PS2 really shows its age. It cannot produce those stunning light effects that a GeForce 2 or better can produce. A secret to the XBOX's or PC's awesome graphics is not in the polygon count, but rather fog rendering and lighting effect that hide blemishes extremely well and make even lowpoly models seems well detailed. Enough talking about the limitations of the PS2, Killzone does very well considering its resources. However, I marked it down a point as sometimes textures appear to be inconsistant with what they usually are. Controlls are not a problem for me as not only are they fully customizable, but Killzone is compatible with a keyboard and mouse. From when I did play on a controller, the analog sticks felt to be a bit floaty. However, that is an understatment as I am a PC gamer, so I see any console FPS as a game with floaty controls. Luckily, the sensitivity is fully adjustable, so I suggest that you put it down a few notches. With Killzone, you either love it or hate it. My recomendation is to rent it, and see which side you're on.
