One of the most insane, unique, and charming games ever made

User Rating: 8.5 | Katamari Damacy PS2
Many games today lack the innovation and originality that gave games of the past a label of being classic franchises. However Katamari Damacy does just that with its innovative gameplay and undeniable charm. The story is that the King of all Cosmos, the ruler of the universe, had a party one day and accidentally destroyed all the stars in the sky. He then assigns his son (you) to use sticky, pegged balls called katamari to pick up all the items of earth so that he can make the katamari into stars.

Gameplay consists of you rolling the katamari and picking up anything in your path that is smaller then your katamari. As you pick up more objects they will stick on to your ball making it bigger thus allowing you to pick up larger objects. The objective of the game is to get your katamari to a certain size before you run out of the amount of time given to you. As the levels proceed you will notice that the scale changes consistently, in the beginning picking up pencils and paperclips, to eventually picking up houses and trees nearing the end. The dual analog stick controls are the only thing you need for gameplay. It may feel awkward at first but after a few stars you should get the hang of it. While this core concept of play may seem strange it actually is an extremely addicting game that can appeal to any gamer.

The graphics are colorful and vivid but nothing ground breaking, many of the objects and people have a cute and unique look to them adding to the games charm. This is also accompanied by one of the strangest, yet delightful sound tracks in video gaming with a mix of elevator music, ballads, and soft jazz. However the game is not without flaws, while the graphics are good, at times the camera points to a wall or an object will block the cameras view. While this is annoying it only happens on occasions and only in small spaces. Also while in the beginning story says that you must replace all the stars in the sky, there are only around 20 levels to play, ranging anywhere from 3 to 25 minutes, making this an overall short game with not many extras, which is a shame considering how fun and addictive the gameplay is. A feature such as infinite time mode would have also added replay value to the game.

Overall this is a great game that everyone should try. With its amazingly innovative gameplay, charming graphics, and original soundtrack, it is definitely worth checking out. However the minor gamplay problems and major lack of content keeps this from being a perfect game. But the problems are overshadowed and the bottom line is: anyone who wants a completely different and fun game needs to play Katamari Damacy.
