Jaws have its problems but the attention to small details and the vast underwater world, make up for the flaws.

In Jaws from Appaloosa you play as the shark, thats right, the giant great white shark from the movie "Jaws". Think of it as Ecco the Dolphin with 300 teeth, several hundred pounds heavier and that sink entire ships. In the beginning of the game you get captured and put in a fish tank, it is up to you to break jaws free. After a combined escape and tutorial mission you are free and can now roam free.

The graphics in the game isn't that great, well at least not above the water. Below the surface things look quite nice, with lots of cool effects. The fishes move naturally and the entire ocean is filled with life. The creators have clearly put a lot of effort into making the ocean as "alive" as possible. There are literally hundreds of different ocean species. From octopuses, whale sharks, blue whales, a lot of different sharks, crocodiles, sting rays, and lots more. One of the greatest things about this game for me was just swimming around and looking for new fish. Another cool detail is that if you stand perfectly still for to long your shark will drown, just like real shark! This is far from the only example of lifelike animal behaviour in this game.

There are also different mission, a main story line and lots of side missions. The side missions are often interesting at first. A side mission is always divided into three parts, first you have to complete the easy part, then the normal and then it gets hard. For each part you get points which you can use to upgrade you sharks abilities. You can make it faster, stronger, more precise in its attacks, take more damage without dying, and go longer without feeding. The problem with these missions is that for example the first mission is "kill 1 person in 30 sek." After that it’s "kill 3 persons in 30 sek." and the hard one is "kill 6 persons in 30 sek." Because the missions are always this predictable it gets boring fast. And you end up just doing these to earn you point so you can upgrade your shark.

Jaws is a quite bloody game as well. You can attack and rip apart almost anything that moves, including boats and boat landings. On humans you can actually aim at a particular body part and bite down at it, then shake you enormous shark head back and forth until the selected body part is ripped right off, with a lot a bleeding and screaming as a result. If you take you time it is possible to rip both arm and legs off, then take the head off and then split the person in half and watch the entrails float around the ocean. Or you could just rip both legs of and watch the terrified human swim to surface, and as the blood floats around the sea, other sharks are attracted to him. Then just sit back and watch a flock of hammerheads finish your job.

The biggest problem is the camera, when you come to close to the surface the camera goes up above the surface and you can have problems seeing what you are doing. It can sometimes make the missions a little harder than they had to be. But as this being the games only MAJOR issue it’s something you can live with. The game is quite short as well. At least the main storyline is short. With the side missions (and if you go out and explore everything there is to explore, collect everything there is to collect) you could probably get about 15-20 hours out of Jaws.

To sum it up: Jaws presents a great underwater adventure. It has its problems with a less than good camera and under par graphics, but a very detailed and vast ocean with lots to discover. If you ever dreamed about being on the top of the food chain, this is the game for you.
