Interesting battle mechanics with a few flaws.

When it comes down to Jade Cocoon 2, it does find a way to offer something new for the player, however with some of the battle mechanics, it doesn't always be in your favour and sometimes the flaws feel more punishing then good.

The story is centred on your character named Kaku, who wants to be the best monster trainer in the forest. He encounters a demon form of himself and runs into trouble which causes him to grow a cursed tail. The story has him run into other people in the world, each with there story, however it feels more of a side story then towards the main one.

The battles allows you to hold up to 7 beasts and lay them out on a grid of 8 spots around Kaku. Each side of the grid represents one of four elements. You start with 2 beasts at the beginning of the game and earn holding more beasts by passing tests in the Arena. You obtain more beast buy finding eggs and hunting them them in the game world. Each beast can have 3 attacks however as you lay them out, they can only use the one which the element they're standing on.

To change or earn you attacks, your beast must be over level 15 and must merge with other beasts, the game offers you. This allows you to select which attack you want and also allows them to grow stronger. The maximum level is 20 and after merge them started again at lvl 1.

This is where the game gets really annoying, if you want to change attack, you'll have to wait and battle until many beasts are level 15 and especiality during the dreaded boss battles when your attacks do mean everything. When it happens, you'll be taking alot of your time just grinding to level until you want to change your attacks. Also ssing items is flaw and has no logic as the game locks the player on the previous used element formation, which is a waste of time, meaning you can't switch monsters and then use your items.

The game world allows you to move around a forest, to move onto the next level, the player must find and disgust keyspores, which opens the gate to the next area. At the end of each world, is a boss battle.

The game has a shop, however you must complete jobs to allow yourself to open new items. The jobs system allows you to get rewards and earn more reputation points however during the end point of the game, you wouldn't get accessed to it, meaning you wouldn't be able to unlock all those needed important items.

There also a breeding place, so if the player wants to store beast, they can grow until they reach level 20 and merge them and keep breeding them.

After the first playthough, you can continue and face more powerful creatures and opponents, so unlike you really want to get to grips with the battle system, there you chance to see the games huge replayability. There a whole bunch of easter eggs in the game, which is really fun for the most commited player.

Playing first time around would mean taking your time to discover what the game really offers, however those flaws really take alot of fun away from the game and you'll be spending alot of time trying to fix the battle mechanics, however this should of been done beforehand and is gravely unfair for the player.
