A licensed game that excels, even if its film adaptation didn't.

User Rating: 7 | Hulk GC

Pros:

  • Accurately captures the essence of the "Hulk" comics as best as a video game could at the time.
  • Writing and characterization feel pretty spot-on; it's interesting to have this as something of a "sequel" to the movie.
  • Eric Bana's voice acting is good stuff.
  • Cel-shaded visual style is befitting of the comic book origins.
  • Controls are incredibly smooth and still feel good today.
  • Utilizes the Hulk's powers in a very satisfying way.
  • Smashing things up as the Hulk just feels damn good.

Cons:

  • The stealth levels are…yuck.
  • Admittedly, the combat/enemy variety gets slightly repetitive at points.
  • The camera is static, which can make some moments frustrating.

Consensus: I admittedly never watched 2003's "Hulk," but I've heard PLENTY of mixed things about it. With that being the case, we may have the rare example of a licensed video game adaptation that actually eclipses the film it's based on. "Hulk" (the video game, not the film) was a big part of my childhood that I recently decided to go back to, and it's still pretty damn fun today. It's still extremely satisfying to smash everything in your path as the Hulk, and the gameplay as a whole still feels good today. Yes, there are still issues with it (while it's cool that you get to play as Bruce Banner, the stealth sections are pretty lackluster), but this is a licensed game with some bang for your buck. If you can find it for a decent price and have a nostalgic kick, give it a try. You might even like it more than the movie.
